Cruise, Holmes drop 10K on steak dinner
Plus: Katie's wedding perfume costs $2,350 per ounce

Tom Cruise’s romantic gestures aren’t limited to couch jumping.

The “Top Gun” star reportedly shelled out $10,000 for a dinner with fiancée Katie Holmes. Cruise took the mother of his daughter to Mastro’s Steakhouse in Beverly Hills, according to In Touch Weekly, and to ensure their privacy, he paid 10 grand for a private dining room usually booked by groups of 15 or more.

Looks like Holmes is developing pricey tastes. In addition to selecting a lavish Armani wedding gown, ITW also reports that the bride-to-be has selected the scent she’ll wear on her wedding day: Clive Christian No. 1, one of the most expensive perfumes in the world, which retails for $2,350 an ounce.

I cut out the bulk of the article, which was gossipy and lame.  The main reason I posted this was because I wanted to point out that I approve of celebrities or anyone who's extremely wealthy spending large amounts on things like this.  Yes, it's an excessive amount to spend on something like this, however this is where money goes back into the general populace and helps the overall economy.

I remember people freaking out about the $200 million that was spent on filming Titanic, a good chunk of which went to building their replica boat off the shores of somewhere in Mexico that they subsequently sunk and ruined.  There were a lot of people crying what a waste that was, but all I could think was that while he was there he put so much money into their community and their lives.   He paid for the wood, the builders, the nails, the food to feed the crew, the people to cook the food, etc. etc. All that money goes somewhere.

The money for this is the same thing, granted it's for one item in both cases, but that money trickles downhill and helps put food in the mouths of other people's children.  It's when that money sits in the bank or in stocks collecting interest that it does nothing for the betterment of the US economy.  If they want to spend millions on their wedding, then good for them, because it will be good for everyone involved and their families too.

Well, the money sure goes back to the economy and everything, but it's still a waste of money.

He could have given those money he spent to any charity organizations. Sad

Tom made his money honestly. If you do, you deserve to have some comforts and perks and so does he.  I'm sure Tom contributes to various charities, and it's really not our business how he spends his money.

I think it is just a waste of money. Obviously he didn't know that there are people out there who can't even afford a wedding dinner when they marry. I know that wedding is very important to anybody, but I just feel it is not right to waste such a huge amount of money on just 1 dinner.

But when people like him spend money like that, it makes the odds that someone else can afford a wedding more likely.  That money trickles down and ultimately creates jobs.  Giving to charity is a good thing, but so is spending into the economy and creating jobs for others.  There's no reason he can't do both.

This might sound incredibly rude and insenstive and I apologize in advance, but I don't see why Tom or any other celebrity or person with money should spend minimal amounts of money on their wedding because other people cannot afford that kind of wedding.

I am getting married in a 5 star resort in Mexico in attendance are probably about 50 people between both families and very close friends. I don't see why I should not have my dream wedding because other people are less well off and cannot afford it. I didn't dream a wedding outside my means (err my parents). They gave us a budget and we worked around what we could do. Tom and Katie between the two of them have a heckuva lotta money and can have this perfect wedding that they both dream of.

I'm wondering how many people will complain when Prince Harry and Kate Middleton get married or how many complained about how much Diana and Prince Charles spent on their wedding. If you have the money to spend and that's how you choose to spend it then okay. Who are we to question how others spend their money.

He made the money himself and just because other people doesn't have what he has shouldn't dictate what he does with it. It's just one dinner. I mean, yes he may have spent alot to us...But what he spent would be like a $50 dinner to us.

Basically, it's just how people in Singapore don't live life like people in America does.

In Singapore, our standard of living is lower and 10k is equivalent to a normal person 10 months salary in Singapore. Hence i feel that it's a waste to just spend the money on one simple dinner. Not trying to be rude or what, yes it's true that he earned his own money.. but you just can't deny that spending 10k on a dinner is not a waste of money.

Maybe you are right on who are we to decide how he should spend his money, but isn't that just simply a showoff to people?

I understand what Rhune meant by returning to the society and everything, but how many people actually received benefits from a 10k dinner? Huh

I don't have an issue with celebs or any other very wealthy people spending their money as they wish, what I do have a problem is is with celebs who are forever using their fame to raise awareness and fundraising for poverty stricken countries and the like ( and don't get me wrong that's a very good thing) but then have the hide to not put their money where their mouth is!!! U2 frontman Bono is one in particular....he's currently in Australia touring with the band and has met with our Prime Minister and Treasuer to TELL them how Australia should allocate it's taxpayers funds to help poorer countries yet this man has a tax bill in his homeland of Ireland of $ 30 million which he refuses to pay therefore depriving many thousands of underprivilaged children and families in Ireland of better schools, hospitals etc! Hey bono how about helping to clean up your own backyard before you start telling others how to spend their money!!!

It's hard to say, but potentially a lot.  An extra 10k to that restaurant may mean they now have resources available to hire another employee, who may be supporting a family on that income.  In turn that family, now making money buys groceries and things they couldn't afford before, again trickling that money downhill and potentially creating other jobs.  It's when that money sits in the bank collecting interest that it benefits no one (except Tom).  It's not a question of whether he had that money or not, he has that money and more.  He can spend it and put it back into the economy actively, or he can sit on it.  I prefer he spends it!

My first thought is that wealthy celebrities do this stuff all the time, ie Paris, Lindsay, Nicole
But it gets publicized when it's TomKat.   Huh

I was just about to post that...Wealthy folk (and by that I mean mutlimillionaire close to billionaire type folk) spend crazy amounts of money on things all the time. But because its Tom Cruise its in the news. Trista and Ryan of the Bachelorette spent something like 1 million $ on their wedding (okay ABC did...), I watched pieces of Newlyweds where Jessica Simpson spent 700$ on one single underwear.
