Terror warnings for ASEAN summit site

CEBU, Philippines : The United States and Australia on Thursday joined Britain in warning of possible imminent terror attacks on a Philippines island that will host leaders from across Asia next week.

But Philippines security officials said there was no information about threats to meetings in Cebu, which will draw leaders from Southeast Asia as well as China, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand and India.

"We strongly advise you not to travel to Cebu province. Recent information suggests terrorists are in the final stages of planning attacks," Australia's foreign ministry said on its website.

It urged Australians travelling to the province to "exercise extreme caution."

The US embassy, in a message to Americans, said it had received information that a "terrorist group may be planning to carry out a terror attack in Cebu."

It did not specify where, or whether it was specifically aimed at summit meetings of the 10-nation Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) from December 10-14.

The leaders will also meet their counterparts from China, Japan and South Korea. The second East Asian Summit on December 13 also groups Australia, New Zealand and India.

The US embassy warned its citizens to avoid travel to the tourist island of Cebu and urged Americans already there to "reassess their own personal safety and avoid public gathering places."

The warning follows similar statements from the British Foreign Office, which said Wednesday: "We advise against all travel to Cebu province, as we believe that terrorists are in the final stages of planning attacks."

The Philippines is fighting an ongoing insurgency involving the al-Qaeda-linked Abu Sayyaf group of Muslim extremists in the south.

The Abu Sayyaf has been responsible for some of the country's worst terrorist outrages, including the bombing of a ferry three years ago that killed over 100 people and a series of bomb blasts in the capital on Valentine's Day in 2005 which left many dead and injured.

Some 5,000 troops and police have been drafted in to provide security. But officials played down a threat to the summit, being hosted for the first time in Cebu.

"As far back as June we received information of possible terrorist threats during the Asean summit, mainly ASG and RSN," said the regional head of police operations, Chief Superintendent Silverio Alarcio.

He was referring to the Abu Sayyaf Group and the Raja Solaiman Movement, another Muslim extremist group.

But Alarcio told AFP there had been no recent information.

"Our assets (informers) on the ground are telling us: no threat to the summit. This is a quiet region, we don't have terror attacks. But we are on alert throughout Cebu."

Military spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Bartolome Bacarro said earlier there had been no validated threat of an attempted attack during the summit.

National police spokesman Senior Superintendent Samuel Pagdilao said that as far as police were concerned, "there (has been) no specific and direct terror threat received in connection with the ASEAN summit."

Bacarro said security forces "are all prepared and all contingencies have been taken into consideration," including possible attacks by sea or air.

actually locally there are no confirmed threats to security...  and so I don't think that there is a threat for you Popo to come over here...

our local police in the island has not even elevated their security alert...

anyways... the ASEAN Summit was postponed for January due to the typhoon that has just crossed the country... and now has left a number more of people dead and high damage cost to property and agriculture...
