23 Greyhounds Found Dead, 'Experienced Prolonged Suffering' at Alabama Race Track

Tuesday , January 16, 2007

SHORTER, Ala. — Autopsies have been ordered on 23 greyhounds that were found dead at the VictoryLand dog track and the state agriculture commission is investigating, officials said.

Five of the dogs were sent to a lab at Auburn University, and the other 18 were sent to Tuskegee University for autopsies Friday.

The cause of their deaths was believed to be a heating malfunction in one of the track's kennels.

"From first appearance, that appears to be the cause," Agriculture Commissioner Ron Sparks said.

A phone message left for a VictoryLand spokeswoman was not immediately returned Monday.

The Greyhound Protection League is calling for an independent safety taskforce review of all Alabama kennel compounds following the deaths.

Susan Netboy, president of the Penn Valley, Ca.-based organization, said the deaths were an "avoidable man-made tragedy that has to be prevented in the future."

"Whatever the cause of death, the dead and injured dogs experienced prolonged suffering before there was any manner of human intervention," Netboy said in a statement.

"The 50 plus survivors need proper veterinary care and transportation to legitimate greyhound adoption organizations so that they can recover and live out their days in a loving home. We intend to make sure that the victims don't quietly disappear."

Our greyhound who we adopted 9 years ago used to race at Alabama.  That's so sad.

I find it incomprehensible that no one was monitoring the facility.  No night watchman or anything?

The problem is they probably didn't have any kind of external monitoring on the heater in the kennels that the watchman was aware of.  Probably he didn't go anywhere near the dogs personally, and from a small monitor they may have looked as if they were sleeping instead.  If the heater malfunctioned after they were last fed, and they weren't expected until morning for the next feeding, they would have had several hours of exposure.  I'm just supposing here, though. I don't know all the details or if there even was a watchman.  I'm just thinking of plausible reasons they might not have noticed.  These dogs are a financial investment for them, so I doubt they would have deliberately let them freeze to death like this.

I'm sure more will come to like as the investigation continues. Personally, I would like this defined.  How long is prolonged?

So, basically, they froze to death at the negligence of humans. This really riles me up!  Animals and children are defensely when it comes to this type thing. They depend on adults to take care of them.

I only went to the dog races once.  It is kind of bizarre.  But so is horse racing.  Consider Barbaro.
