3 DJs fired after deadly water-drinking contest

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A radio station fired 10 employees, including its three morning disc jockeys, after a woman died following an on-air water-drinking contest last week.

The hosts of KDND-FM's "Morning Rave" were fired Tuesday, a day after the station said it was suspending the show and investigating the death of Jennifer Lea Strange.

Strange, 28, was one of about 18 contestants who tried to win a Nintendo Wii gaming console by seeing how much water they could drink without going to the bathroom. The show's DJs called the contest "Hold your Wee for a Wii."

During the contest, participants were given two minutes to drink an 8-ounce bottle of water and then given another bottle to drink after a 10-minute break.

Strange may have drunk nearly two gallons, witnesses said. She appeared ill, one contestant said.

After the contest, Strange called in sick to work. She was found dead at her home about five hours later.

The Sacramento County coroner said preliminary autopsy findings indicated she died of water intoxication.

Drinking large quantities of water rapidly can throw off the body's balance of electrolytes, causing brain swelling and leading to seizures, coma or even death.

Strange had showed fellow contestants photographs of her two sons and daughter, for whom she was hoping to win the Nintendo Wii. The game console sells for about $250.

Wow, this reminds me last week on Smiley Morning Show (Z99.5, Local Morning Show) they had a contest to see if they could drink a full gallon of milk in an hour without throwing up. They say it's impossible to do and they wanted to try it...they got 4-6 people to do it INCLUDING a DRUNK LACTOSE INTOLLERANT Guy!!!

I had to get off the bus in the middle of it so I couldn't listen to the end. All I heard is there was alot of puke in the end.

We had a local station do this very same "contest" the Wee for Wii" thing.  One of the morning DJ's challenged them, told them she could hold hers longer and was drinking water with the others.  After it was over she was dizzy and didn't feel well.  Earlier this week, when this happened, they were discussing how easily this could have been her... had no idea about water intoxication.  One of the others (who wasn't there when they did the contest) said... "don't you all remember that guy in the fraternity a few years ago who died from water intoxication?"  None of them did... I remember it, and remember them discussing it THEN... couldn't believe they'd forgotten all about it...

Sad that someone lost their life, or would even risk their life for something as trivial as a game console... Sad

I've mentioned this before, but every couple years some woman inadvertently kills her new baby in the same way, trying to save money by adding more water to the formula mix than you're supposed to.  Formula is supposed to be mixed just exactly as they call for on the package, or they can die from the electrolytes unbalancing.
