Missing Lubbock Baby Found

Just in case any of you have been following and missed the news this morning.  They found her in Clovis New Mexico
-----------------------------------------

A newborn baby kidnapped from a hospital in the middle of the night has sparked a statewide manhunt and multiple Amber Alerts in Texas and New Mexico, authorities said.

The search for Mychael Darthard-Dawodu continued early Sunday as police looked for a woman who posed as a medical worker and walked out of Covenant Lakeside Hospital with the 5-pound baby hidden away in her purse.

Tips about the abduction came in from across the region and the country, Lubbock police Lt. Scott Hudgens said.

So far, "nothing's working out for us," he said. "There's no telling where they went."

Hospital surveillance footage showed a woman wearing blue and flower-print hospital scrubs and a gray, puffy jacket with a hood walking out of the hospital around 1:20 a.m. Saturday. She fled in a red pickup truck, possibly with a male accomplice, police said.

Police described the alleged abductor as a black woman with a light complexion and short, dark hair. She is believed to be in her early 20s.

The baby was 3 days old when she was kidnapped.

The baby was jaundiced but Hudgens did not have any other information on her medical condition. Jaundice is a common complication in newborns that causes a yellowing of the skin because of a buildup of pigment in the blood.

The parents, Caisha Darthard and Michael A. Dawodu, and other family members declined comment Saturday, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The mother is "distraught, and like us, praying for the safe return of her little girl," said Covenant Health System Vice President Gwen Stafford.

The newborn was wearing a monitoring device but it was not clear if it included a global positioning system beacon.

"We have a very good and sophisticated security" system, Stafford said.

Later she declined to comment on what sort of system is used with newborns.

"I don't want to compromise the security system," Stafford said. "If this system did fail then there was something that didn't work as we wanted it to such that it was compromised."

The abductor, disguised as a medical worker, went into the mother's room several times before the baby was taken, Stafford said. The woman told the mother the baby needed tests, Stafford said.

"I think there was more than one attempt," Stafford said. "I'm trying to verify if it was two or three times."

Hudgens said the mother alerted someone that her baby was gone within about 15 minutes.

Scary stuff...hope everything is ok with the baby.  Wonder why she stole a child and then gave him to someone else...that makes no sense...

I'm wondering if it was a deal to sell the baby?  They said on the news this morning she had an accomplice who drove the car to pick her up.

The baby is fine and back with her parents tonight.. just saw it on the news.  The dad said they weren't taking any chances with her being transported by anyone, they went and got her.. Cheesy

LUBBOCK, Texas (CNN) -- A kidnapping suspect was scheduled to face a New Mexico judge Monday as the mother of a 5-day-old baby who was abducted planned to make her first public statement about the case.

Police found Mychael Dawodu early Sunday in Clovis, New Mexico, the day after authorities said the jaundiced newborn was snatched from Lubbock's Covenant Lakeside Hospital by a woman posing as a nurse.

"The baby looks to be in good condition," Clovis Police Chief Dan Blair said.

Though jaundice is a common condition in newborns, authorities had been concerned because it can become serious without the proper treatment. (Watch a hospital official describe hearing the good news about Mychael )

Rayshaun Parson, 21, was arrested in Clovis in connection with the alleged kidnapping. She is scheduled to appear at an extradition hearing at noon ET Monday, said Curry County District Attorney Matt Chandler.

Clovis is 100 miles northwest of Lubbock.

"The motive is still trying to be cleared up," Chandler said. "But Rayshaun was very desperate for a child, and she actually went well over 100 miles to get that child."

Parson faces an aggravated kidnapping charge in Texas, but Lubbock police Lt. Scott Hudgens said that will be weighed against any possible federal charges.

FBI Agent Lori Bailey in Dallas told The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that the agency is considering filing federal kidnapping charges.

Mychael's parents, Caisha LaShae Darthard, 20, and Michael Anuoluwapo Dawodu haven't made a public comment regarding the case. They were expected to break their silence at an 11:30 a.m. news conference. (Watch how the newborn was found )

Police allege that Parson went into the mother's hospital room Saturday, "told the family they needed to take the baby for some tests and then left the room," Hudgens said.

There is no indication that Parson had any ties to the baby's family, Hudgens said.

The infant was wearing a security bracelet, which the hospital places on all newborns, but it was removed during the alleged kidnapping, Covenant's senior vice president Gwen Stafford told CNN.

In remarks to the Lubbock newspaper, Stafford conceded that hospitals need to "do better" when it comes to security but said the kidnapper may have benefited from inside information.

"This individual was pretty sophisticated or at least knowledgeable of what happens at health care institutions," Stafford told the paper, adding that the impersonation of a medical worker made the situation more difficult. "But that's no excuse. We've got to do better."

Security cameras showed a suspect -- wearing medical scrubs and a bulky winter coat with a fur hood -- walking through the hospital and getting into a Dodge pickup outside the hospital. (Watch the security camera footage )

Lubbock police received a tip early Sunday that a woman matching the Amber Alert description had been spotted in Clovis, Hudgens said. Lubbock police called Clovis authorities, who recovered the child about 3 a.m.

Parson was arrested near the home where she had apparently dropped off the infant, Blair said.

Parson has had run-ins with the law before. Most recently, she was charged with fraud in January 2005, but the case was dismissed in July, according to court documents.

In May 2004, a protective order was issued against her in a domestic dispute involving a boyfriend, according to New Mexico online court documents
