Pet Food Recall
« on: Mar 18th, 2007, 12:42pm »

(CBS/AP) The Food and Drug Administration says contaminated dog food that was sold in 23 states has killed almost two dozen dogs nationwide and sickened 18 others.

The FDA says some of the recalled product was exported to at least 29 countries including several in the European Union. The FDA says those countries have been notified.

The deaths and illnesses sparked an FDA investigation into the pet food made by the Diamond Pet Food Co. at its, manufacturing plant Gaston, South Carolina. The FDA said 23 animal deaths have been linked to the pet food so far.

The company, based in Missouri, issued a recall of 19 varieties of dog and cat food on Dec. 21 because some of the pet food made at the Gaston plant was discovered to have contained aflatoxin.

Aflatoxin, a naturally occurring chemical that comes from a fungus sometimes found on corn and other crops, can cause severe liver damage. Aflatoxin poisoning can cause sluggishness, lack of appetite and in severe cases heavy vomiting, fever and jaundice.

The recalled pet food was sold in 23 states under the brand names Diamond, Country Value and Professional, and bears the date codes of March 1, 2007, through June 11, 2007. The FDA is advising consumers to immediately stop using the product.

The affected states, according to Diamond, are: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina,
Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Last week, Tony Caver, the state veterinarian in South Carolina, said that state has five presumed cases linked to aflatoxin, including three fatalities.

Seven dogs from the Rochester, New York, area are being treated for liver disease and failure at the Cornell University Hospital for Animals after eating contaminated food, said university spokeswoman Sabina Lee. An area veterinarian discovered the link after three dogs died in the area, she said.

In a Dec. 20 press release, the company said it had notified distributors to stop sales of Diamond pet food that had used corn. The next day it ordered the recall.

"To ensure we got all the affected product or potential to be affected, we cast a very wide net with the recall," Diamond spokesman Jim Fallon said Friday. He said the company is conducting tests and has set up a toll free consumer information center (1-866-214-6945) to handle questions.

"We are working with customers and their vets to confirm a link between the pet food and the pet's illnesses," he said. "Our whole focus is saving pets' lives and doing the right thing."

Diamond, in an alert for consumers posted on its website, says symptoms of potential illness in dogs may be difficult to discern but can include:

Loss of appetite

Yellow whites of the eyes, yellow gums, yellow in the belly or areas where hair is very thin

Severe, persistent vomiting combined with bloody diarrhea

Discolored urine

Fever

The company said it is analyzing retained samples of all the affected pet food products in Gaston in an attempt to isolate specific lot numbers and provide the information to distributors, retailers and customers.

Pet foods which have had some lots recalled - check the date on the package to determine if there is a problem - include, according to Diamond:

Diamond Premium Adult Dog Food

Diamond Hi-Energy Dog Food

Diamond Maintenance Dog Food

Diamond Professional for Adult Dogs

Diamond Performance Dog Food

Diamond Puppy Food

Diamond Low Fat Dog Food

Go to ABC.com, or menufoods.com for the complete list.  The list also appeared in the Sunday paper, here  Those recalled are the wet, gravy type pet foods.

Iams is on the list, but it's the canned food, not the dry.  My mom's cat was nearly killed by it. Sad  He's recovering though.

Is it all just wet food, not dry food? My boy eats Iams dry but Friskies wet. I know other folks that use dry food whose brand is on the list.

Lake, is Tabby safe?

thank goodness we don't use anything on the list... the cats don't eat wet food (none of them like it... they prefer the dry) and the dogs eat Pedigree and Beneful... when they eat canned/pouches.  Lots of folks in the area with sick dogs.. Sad  One lady had 5, all in the doggie ICU... PetSmart and the dog food company are paying her vet bills.. over $7000.00 it said on the news last night..  Shocked

It's so sad to lose a pet for any reason, but this is so bad.  Expect lawsuits.

I'm unsure if it's all wet or not.  I know for certain the Iams and Eukanba stuff was canned and not dry, and there were also some packets of the wet/soft food by them as well.

A couple of news sources said it was the type with gravy.  If anyone is seriously concerned about their pet's food, I'd go to the news sources or www.menufoods.com/recall for lot numbers.

My cats eat Special Kitty (wal mart brand) but the recall for that brand was only for the pouch food and my cats eat the canned food. We checked the codes to make sure though!

I don't see how cats can eat this stuff anyways.  It tastes nasty.
