That twister was reportedly close to 2 miles wide at the ground!  So sad.  Thoughts, prayers and contributions to all those poor families who lost people and their homes.   :wail:

I believe my Biology teacher said that only 10 people died. Sad, but amazing there weren't more.

One of the good things about living in "tornado alley" is that they have such a strong network of alerts and warning when something is coming.  Where I'm at in Kansas they have regular siren tests to make sure they are all working correctly and that everyone is able to hear them.  They have insanely loud tv alerts if your tv is on, so loud and alarming that I have to calm my children and talk with them every time one has gone off (not my favorite part about it, but I understand why the loud alerts are necessary), and like the building where I'm working at, we get overhead alerts if there is a tornado and a safe place to go to.   Trailer parks are required to have a tornado shelter, etc.

One of the biggest problems is that we've heard the drills and sirens so many times. I think it starts to get to be the boy who called wolf for some folks, and I would not be surprised at all if some of the 10 who died made little effort to leave their homes or secure shelter when the sirens went off, thinking this was just going to be another one that blows off and turns out to be nothing.  We get so many false alerts and maybes.

It's just a tragedy they died, and an even bigger tragedy what happened to this town.   I hope they are able to get the funds they need to get it rebuilt, one way or another.

I understand Rhune, my geography teacher talked to us about false alarms for volcanic eruptions the other day and how it had to be accurate so as not to throw people off in future. Tongue

Tornadoes fascinate me for some reason... amazing to me that wind can do that much damage... and, as someone else said, seeing it, it's amazing more people weren't killed.

I agree yesteach.  I am alos fascinate by them as well.  We had a storm last summer Cloud bursts (I think that is what they call them) so not even a tornado, trees were down, power lines, roofs off houses and no power in some places for a week and it wasnt even a tornado.  I was at work, I work at a bank so I had a good view (huge windows) of the strom.  It was freaky.  I cant even amagine a tornado.

we had "straight line winds" a few weeks ago.. no rotation, just wind... up to 90mph.. with gusts over 100.. and "genius" me was driving home in it.. kept blowing my little truck sideways while I was driving... once I actually considered stopping and hanging out at the convenience store on my way home and let it blow over, but it was too crowded so I kept driving... got home, the news is report "hurricane force winds"... hmmm... guess that's why my truck was so hard to handle.. Smiley

Yikes.  Well you were very brave to drive in that.  You must have been pretty scared.
