Shocked :faint:

Michigan Man in Wheelchair Pinned to Grille of
Semitrailer for 4-Mile Ride
Thursday, June 07, 2007

PAW PAW, Mich. —  A man was taken on a wild ride when his wheelchair became lodged in the grille of a semitrailer and was accidentally pushed down a highway for four miles at about 50 mph, authorities said.

The 21-year-old man, whose name was not released, was unharmed but was taken to a hospital as a precaution. He had been secured to his wheelchair by a seat belt.

"The man spilled his soda pop, but he wasn't upset," said Sgt. Kathy Morton of the Michigan State Police.

About 4 p.m. Wednesday, a caller told police dispatchers, "You are not going to believe this: There is a semi truck pushing a guy in a wheelchair on Red Arrow Highway," state police said in a release.

Authorities initially wondered whether the report was a prank call until others called with similar reports.

Officers stopped the truck — wheelchair still attached — at a trucking company. The driver didn't believe officers until he stepped from his cab and saw for himself.

"When he saw us, he was like, 'What's going on?"' Morton said.

An investigation revealed the man in the wheelchair had pulled in front of the truck at a gas station and it somehow became lodged by its handles to the front grille.

I hope he's all right. Drivers these days should be more careful, but ahhh... i think this is done accidentally and both parties were responsible for it.

The wheelchair man shouldn't have stopped behind a truck, while the truck driver needs to be more alert.

He wasn't behind the truck, he was in front of it.. apparently the driver was up so high he didn't see the guy crossing in front of his truck, and when he hit the chair, the handle (where you would hold to push someone) got wedged in the grill and he pushed the guy down the stret in front of him... at speeds tha reached up to 50mph, according to the report I saw!

I'm glad his wheels held up for the ride.  One crumpled wheel and he would have been UNDER the truck.

Well, the man in the semi couldn't see the wheelchair guy in front of him. He had no knowledge of him being there. Popo said that he should have been more aware, well the only way to do that is to get out of your truck and walk around to see if anyone is there. Now for one, no one does that. And two, that doesn't do anything because right when he turns around and gets back in, someone could be about to walk in front of  his truck. Really, it isn't anyones fault. But the man in the wheelchair shouldn't get that close to a truck anyway, that's common knowledge that you should stay far enough away so that you are out of there blindspot.
