Teenager's feet severed in amusement park ride

This is just horrific and I will continue to follow the story closely.  Originally, I thought the legs were cut just above the ankle.  Whatever...I am just sick over this.  I've never done anything like this, but I plan to somehow send her some words of support.  She has a long, hard road ahead of her.

Report: Parks shut down drop-tower rides after teen loses feet

(CNN) -- A teen who lost her feet in an accident at a Kentucky amusement park has undergone surgery, a park spokeswoman said Friday, while two park operators closed similar rides around the country.

The Superman Tower of Power at Louisville's Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom was shut down after Thursday's accident, and Six Flags spokeswoman Wendy Goldberg said Friday the company closed similar rides at parks in St. Louis, Missouri; Gurnee, Illinois; and near Washington, D.C., as a precaution, The Associated Press reported.

There had been no reports of injuries on the ride before Thursday, Goldberg told AP. "Millions of people have safely ridden this ride in our parks," Goldberg said.

Another park operator, Cedar Fair Entertainment Co., closed drop rides at Kings Island near Cincinnati, Ohio; Canada's Wonderland in Toronto, Ontario; Kings Dominion in Doswell, Virginia.; Carowinds, in Charlotte, North Carolina; and Great America in Santa Clara, California, the AP reported.

"We're going to keep these things down until we're certain it's safe," Cedar Fair spokesman Craig Ross told the AP. "We'll wait and see."

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom spokeswoman Carolyn McLean said she has been in touch with the injured 13-year-old girl's family and believed the girl is still receiving treatment at the University of Louisville Hospital.

Hospital spokeswoman Julie Gordon would not discuss details of the surgery or recovery, citing patient privacy.

The girl's name was not released because she is a minor.

The girl's feet were completely amputated just below the ankle Thursday afternoon while riding the Superman Tower of Power at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in Louisville.

Her feet were recovered by Six Flags staff and were sent to the hospital with her, McLean said.

During the Tower of Power ride, passengers are hoisted aloft, suspended momentarily, then pulled down, according to the park's Web site. Passengers -- secured with bars and seat belts but with arms and legs free -- drop 154 feet at 54 mph, stopping "just 20 terrifying feet above the pavement," the Web site says.

A police dispatcher said a cord wrapped around the girl's feet while she was on the ride.

"I seen the car go up. Then, like, the cable broke ... and I heard a lot of people screaming," Chris Stinnett, who was at a ride next to the Tower of Power, told CNN affiliate WDRB/WMYO-TV in Louisville.

"The cable went under the car -- and I seen it pull up and hit a lot of people -- and I seen them bring their legs up," he said. (Watch witnesses describe the accident )

"We are not confirming that happened," McLean said. "There was a lot of misinformation from witnesses."

The ride will remain closed until a full investigation by state officials and "our team of experts" is conducted, McLean said.

The inspectors will interview staff members, witnesses and speak with the girl and her family, she said.

"Every ride, every investigation is different," she said.

The rest of the park was operating as normal on Friday.

I kept thinking it's amazing the poor girl didn't bleed to death before they could get her down and to a hospital.

We have one of these that the Six Flags here in Dallas, it's up and running still as of yesterday.  The park said they inspect rides every day, and that it is made by a different company than the one there... I'd be curious to see just how short that line is this weekend.

This is so sad.

Lakelady, maybe everyone at forumsnet can get together and somehow make a big card that we can all sign.

But like yesteach said, I'd be quite interested too on how short the lines are for this ride.

I understand she underwent surgery right away.  Is there word on whether they were able to reattach her own feet?  I know they successfully reattached someone's arm not too long ago (maybe a year or two ago).

I looked yesterday as well and they do say that she went to the hospital immediately and that she's been there since, but that the family has made it clear they don't want the press involved citing their right to privacy, and the hospital has placed security around her keeping people out and refused to comment on whether she had her feet reattached or not.

Questions linger in amusement park accident

08:15 PM EDT on Wednesday, June 27, 2007

What we do know is that hundreds of you have been asking us in person and through our website about the condition of Kaitlyn Lasitter, the 13-year-old Louisville girl whose feet were severed in the accident.

But you've been asking other questions as well...some of which we just can't answer.

The biggest question most of you are asking: have Kaitlyn Lasitter's feet been reattached?

The simple answer is we don't know for sure.  Sources familiar with this case tell us one of her feet has been reattached, the other has not. But we can't get that confirmed, mainly because of a federal health privacy law, called HIPPA that prevents Vanderbilt Hospital from releasing health information.

Question two: how long will her recovery take?

Spokesmen for two Louisville hospitals wouldn't speculate but it's clear Kaitlyn will go through several months of rehab.

And the next question: Why was she transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville?

Vanderbilt has a specialized pediatric orthopedic unit that's capable of reattaching feet.  Here in Louisville, Kutz and Kleinert have done intricate hand surgery, even reattaching arms and fingers, but their web site doesn't mention anything about similar surgery on feet.  And a spokesman for Kosair Children's Hospital says he's unaware of his hospital doing any similar surgery on a child.

Lastly: Why did the ride malfunction?

We still don't know.  Kentucky Department of Agriculture inspectors and investigators are still looking into that and won't talk about what preliminary information they have.

A Kentucky Department of Agriculture spokesman says ride investigators hope to have an incident report ready Friday, but that still won't tell us the cause of the malfunction. That report could be weeks away.
