Carmel - Four people are dead after their van slid into a pond near Carmel late Saturday.

Witnesses say the van crashed into a pond at the Lincolnshire subdivision at 141st Street and Towne Road around 9:30 pm, trapping a woman and her three daughters inside. Police say the driver, 47-year-old Batul Abbus, called 911 to report they were half-submerged and needed help

Carmel Police say help arrived within six minutes, and divers went into the water and removed the victims from the car. They were transported to the hospital where all four, including Abbus' children, aged 18, 14 and 8, eventually died from their injuries. The family was just minutes from home when the accident occurred.

"This is a tragic and sad situation we are in right now," said Carmel Police Lieutenant Jeff Horner.

Lieutenant Horner says the van was completely submerged by the time rescuers arrived. The first firefighters on the scene went into the frigid water without any protective gear to keep them warm. They were only wearing sweat suits.

"They were able to get the windows smashed. It was under water, completely submerged," Lt. Horner said. "They were going underwater, trying to get the individuals out of the water."

"They didn't waste any time, they went right into the water," said witness Carlos Castneda, who called the rescue effort "heroic".

The second crew of divers arrived properly equipped and continued the rescue as the first firefighters, police say, were experiencing the effects of hypothermia.

The family was just minutes from home last night when their car plunged into the retention pond. Police say icy road conditions played a factor in the accident.

"It was horribly icy," said Wesley Dowden, who drove up on the accident. "You could drive maybe 15 miles per hour. That was top speed."

Police say the family father was out of the country on a business trip. He returned home Sunday afternoon.

A crisis response team in Carmel is now on alert and preparing to help students work through the loss of three classmates and their mother.

I know this is more local, and that isn't normally posted in here. But I couldn't help it. My sister was best friends with the middle daughter. This is such a tragedy and I feel so bad for the pour father. Everything he has is gone. The roads really are terrible out there and this shows that this can happen to any one of us this easily..... Sad Sad Sad

I'm so sorry, Racedude.  My thoughts go out to this poor father and to all that knew and loved this family.
