This is a teacher at my former school, and I think what she did is awesome... I just wanted to share.  If you want to get all teary-eyed, go to the link and see the photos.  This is a low income school, where over 85% are on free/reduced lunch:

Everman teacher gives students a holiday surprise

EVERMAN — Second-graders at Souder Elementary School in Everman found a few more guests than expected at their holiday tea party Friday.

As their parents looked on, the children discovered custom-made stuffed toys occupying their seats.

Teacher Melanie Dent wanted to make Christmas special for her students, many of whom face a lean holiday as their parents struggle with unemployment and tight budgets.

Dent e-mailed her friends and family requesting donations for the bears. They forwarded the e-mail to their friends and families.

"That was three weeks ago," Dent said. "In 24 hours, I had enough money for bears for all of the second grade and all of kindergarten, too."

Dent selected kindergartners because so many of her second-graders have siblings in those classes.

She quickly became a first-name regular at the Build-A-Bear store in Arlington, where the staffers helped as the 180 bears took shape.

"We’ve had bears up to the ceiling," she said.

Dent has had the bear idea for some time.

"A couple of years ago, I had a little boy who asked Santa for a bear and blanket to keep him warm," she said. "That just broke my heart."

Each bear (or monkey, or dog, or cat) has been personalized for its new owner with favorite clothing, colors and interests, and with an extra touch included from a loving teacher.

"I kissed every single heart that went into every single bear," Dent said.
