Heat wave melts records

Kent Spencer , The Province

Thursday, June 27, 2002

Heat records tumbled across B.C. yesterday.

Vancouver recorded its hottest day of the year, 30.2 C at the airport. It was also the warmest June 26 ever, smashing the 1979 mark by almost six degrees, said Environment Canada's Trevor Smith.

It was the fifth warmest June day on record. The highest temperature on record for June is 30.6 C, set on June 2, 1970. Ten more heat records were set across B.C. as a ridge of high pressure in the western U.S. created a "dome of warm air" up our way.

Abbotsford reached a record 31.4, Lytton 35.3, Osoyoos 39.3, Penticton 37.6, Powell River 27.9, Princeton 35.4, Sparwood 30.0, Squamish 30.6, Nelson 31.3 and Pemberton 35.6.

"The temperatures are unusual for June," said Smith. "We usually get the big ridges in July and August."

The usual hot spell in Vancouver occurs during light outflow conditions, with drier air from the Interior warming as it moves to the coast. Higher temperatures occur inland in the Fraser Valley.

In this week's hot spell, the source of the air is more maritime. At 2 p.m. yesterday, the temperature in Hope was 26 while at Vancouver airport it was 29.

The air feels even hotter than it is because it is laden with moisture. The relative humidity is 45 to 50 per cent.

The moisture led to unusual iridescent clouds near the Vancouver airport.

At the Jericho Sailing Centre in Kitsilano, sailors were slapping on the suntan oil, er, sunscreen and dipping their toes in the water.

"For once, it's hotter on the deck than it is for the galley slaves frying hamburgers by the stove," quipped general manager Mike Cotter. "We're going into the kitchen to cool off."

Enjoy the toasty conditions today, because the five-day forecast is for cooler, cloudier and wetter weather. Gale force winds through the Strait of Juan De Fuca and a weakening front will bring cooler air inland today. Maximum temperatures are likely to be about 10 degrees lower under cloudy skies.

"Unfortunately, rain is headed this way for the holiday weekend," said Smith. "We'll have the first batch on Friday."

Imagine all that heat and then imagine a garbage workers strike - like the one that started in Toronto yesterday.

Imagine all the heat and then imagine all the public swimming pools and wading pools being closed for the summer because of a public workers strike.

Imagine all the heat and then imagine you can no longer send your kid to the summer camp you registered them for because there's a public workers strike.

Now imagine the garbage strike and the heat in the context of the Canada Day holiday weekend where in addition to all the Holiday activities and festivities that are happening.  Layer again on top of that the fact that it is Gay Pride week and usually we get about 500,000 visitors into the core of the city for the Gay Pride Parade which is usually attended by 800,000 to 1 million people.  Gay Pride parades in hot weather are really excellent fun.  But without garbage collection?  yikes!  To be fair, the parade organizers are arranging for extra private firms to take on the additional problems of clean up.

A little rain here will help the stench greatly.

Have it but barely use it.  Prefer to open the windows.  however if the stench starts to get bad I guess we will ALL have our windows closed.

PS wednesday had a pretty sad little face last night when we went to the soccer field and there was no class - just a security guard at the community centre door.  Sigh.  Little kids pay the price.  They sure know how to make it hurt.

Apparently the mayor quietly asked the head of the union, as the walked together a bit, if they would please reopen the pools.
