Wheelchair Accessible hiking Trails

We have some close friends of ours and would love to do more outdoors activities with them.  Although the husband was injured many years ago in an accident they had two children born the same year as my daughter.  Thank goodness for invitro fertilization and a special program in toronto that made that miracle possible.

Because the father is a quadraplegic there are many things and places they cannot go.  Recently however we have been camping and hiking where campgrounds have been making facilities wheel chair accessible.  Some of you may recall our vacation at Mammoth Caves in Kentucky last year and they had wheelchair accessible campsites and also wheel chair accessible trips into some of the caves.

I don't think every hiking trail can be made accessible but some can and that way the trails are more inclusive of all families.  I have recommended mammoth caves as a possible vacation destination for our friends because of the accessibility and beauty.

There is always a balance between use of the forests and mountains and keeping them pristine.  Sadly increased use inevitably means more damage - it shouldn't mean this but it often does end up in more litter and folks walking off the trails damaging many of the plant life nearby the trails.
