Wednesday started Kindergarten this morning
« on: Sep 6th, 2002, 9:14am »

We dropped our darling daughter off for her first day at "big school" today.  Yesterday was her last day at "day care" after being there for just over 4 years.

Our "junior kindergarten" is the same as "pre-K" in the USA (as I understand it).  We also have Senior Kindergarten and then grade 1 etc.  Must be 4 years old in the Calendar year to start JK (as it's most often referred to).

She was actually in the JK classroom at her daycare already because they are licensed to teach JK and they bring the kids up into that class even before they turn 4.  So she knows her alphabet and can write her name.

Although she is independent because she has been in extended day care before, it's all new today.  New school, new teachers, bringing her own lunch (wow did it look delicious).

She kissed us good bye after a few first days pics and then was off down a slide.  Not a tear but very quiet parents as we walked away.

It was very cute.  She insisted she would dress herself and no one was to come into her room until she was finished.  At first she came down in an undershirt with bike shorts.  She thought this was considered fully dressed.  She didn't really understand that the frilly undershirt was not a t-shirt.  LOL

I then said that she could not go to school dressed like that and (turned away not to laugh thinking she looked like a rebellious teenager).

Then she came down in a black velvet jumper with spaghetti straps (kept her purple socks on) and she also kept her undershirt on underneath.

I told her how beautiful she looked and then explained softly that the undershirt was a type of underwear and she would need a t-shirt of some sort under the jumper.

I heard her exclaim to her dad on the way back up "I have to try again".  Mom and dad are smiling all the time.

So the final chosen outfit for the first day of school is: a blue and white striped short sleeved T-shirt, with a black velvet spaghetti-strap jumper and purple socks with running shoes.  Would not have been my choice but then it's not my first day at school. LOL.

We took lots of photos and she was happy as a lark at the play ground when we arrived.  Now mom wonders how her day is going...

LOL well hopefully it goes better than Morgan's first day.  When I came back to pick him up the teacher told he he was shoving the other children too much.   Embarassed

Fortunately we had that curbed by the end of the week. That was in June.  We decided to put him in the summer session cause he was bored and driving mom nuts(working from home means I do actually have to get SOME work done.. grin).

However this week he was in trouble again..heh.  On Wed. he figured out how to put his finger in the faucet and spray water everywhere.  On Thurs. he taught it to several other children.. sooooo.....the teacher was none to sorry to see him go home on Thurs. afternoon.  Roll Eyes

Thank you for sharing your story with us.  It really brought back some good memories of "first days of school" at the Irish house. Cry

I'm sure Wednesday is having an exciting day and she will have lots to talk about when you see her again this afternoon.  Here's a hug :hug:for mom, I know you could use one about now.

thanks Lass   that felt great.  Rhune you have me almost spitting my tea on the screen as I am laughing outloud.  I just want to say that Morgan and Wednesday ought not be left alone together unattended.  Either that or be happy with the creative consequences.  Sounds like he's a creative child.

As a parent I learned something about the biting and pushing kids (usually boys but not always I will atest).  They inevitably were lovely children and we ended up being best friends.  Indeed one lovely (and really I mean lovely) boy bit my daughter in every class (infant, toddler, preschool and JK).  One of the bites was particularly ugly.  I was so furious about the bites but the kid was so nice (when not provoked by my daughter-lol).  Kathleen has been completely up to date on her shots and we did not get bad infections.  I learned from this.  It's not the child, it's not his or her parents.  It's a behaviour that can be modified and directed to more appropriate behavior.  They both had there last day this past week and were seen sitting off together and chatting before final goodbyes.

Anyways - thanks to ALL of you for making me feel better this morning.   :grouphug:  edited to say I didn't see Kramer's post when I first posted this reply.  Hi Kramer and thanks for your good wishes.

I just wanted to mention one other thing too about children's names.  this may be a touchy topic but I find it really interesting to see children's names these days.  I like the different names but it's hard to get used to them and also I don't know if they are boys or girls. LOL.

Kathleen is my daughter's name (for those who don't know when I refer to her as Wednesday).  Her cubby is between "Cassius" and "Rome".  Other friends in her class are named Briar, Hunter, Quinn, Rory, Holland, and interesting names like those.  I love the name Rory myself.  Briar and Hunter are girls.  Rory and Quinn are boys.  I have not met Holland yet.  There is a Madeline and a Rebecca which are definite girls names, as is Kathleen.

I have not met Cassius and Rome yet.

addams

I am a Kathleen too - Kathleen Elizabeth.  Mom still calls me Kathleen Lizzy sometimes - it annoyed me as a kid but I'm kind of sentimental about it now.

Glad Wednesday got off to school OK - and its sounds like Mom & Dad did OK too.  What was lunch for the first day?  I know you had some angst about that.

Rhune - Morgan sounds too, too funny.  Made me think of having to discipline my son when on the inside I'm cracking up because its hysterical but I have to maintain that stern Mom look on the outside.

Big hugs to all the Mom's (and Dad's) seeing their little people off to school this week!   :grouphug:  :grouphug:  :grouphug:

Nice story Addams, but I would let her go with her first outfit which reminds me of the movie Big Daddy.

I hope she has a good day.

Keep us posted.

Addams you are a much better woman than I am.  I don't think I could have handled the purple socks with the black jumper, but kudos to Wednesday for doing it all by herself.   I especially like the part where she had to tell dad, she had to try again.  I bet Wednesday has a great day.

Thanks for posting addams..I was working  today and I was wondering about you, Mr. addams,  and sweet Kathleen...and wondering how things went today. I had to laugh when I read about her picking out the outfit, I can see her picking out another outfit and looking so determined while doing it! I am glad you let her wear what she wanted.

I hope that she had a great day!

And all this time I genuinely thought you named her Wednesday Addams!  :yikes:

So how did it go when you picked her up, mom? Smiley  Was she   or   ?

Mine was apparently   at school but then got home and let the   loose...

ROTFLMAOPIMP is all I can say to you and Eastendgirl.  I have been consistent and to be honest don't really want to use her real name on the net so I don't.   Just dropped it today for a special day. look what I learned!  Roo94 has the same name (love your name Roo Wink  )

I can see the cubby names now all lined up Cassius then Wednesday and then Rome.  Perfect!

Wednesday was the daughter on the Addams family and that's why I picked the alias.  Oh my. LOL Really LOL.

the latter LOL, Mine was apparently   at school but then got home and let the   loose...

Yeah she did well but was exhausted at the end of the day.  very very tired.  After we got into the car I heard a little yawn and then a minute later I heard silence.  I turn around and she is completely passed out.  Woke up when we got home but very very cranky.  :Yikes:

Went out to play with her friends and her dad is keeping an eye while mom does important things like check her internet posts.

Apparently all the children did exceptionally well today.  The teachers were blown away.  Wednesday did say today that she really liked her school and she liked the extended aftercare program too.  Which, by the way, they got to play outside on the big kids playground, make popcorn (she told the teacher that her parents NEVER make popcorn at home - poor deprived child), AND we found her sitting in front of a computer with head set on over her ears using an animation program and making a movie.  Yep.  She played it for us when we got there.  Well the Toronto film festival starts this weekend so it seems appropriate.

To hear her say she really liked her new school and telling us a funny story about her teacher made my heart just grow and grow.   But i felt a little bad when I saw her completely passed out in the car.  It was an eventful day and she was very brave IMHO.

Hope everyone's little ones had good days at school today too.  thanks for all your good wishes.

Gas - you and i have to have a discussion, ahem.
