Finding a new church

We are church shopping at the moment after a change of minister at our possibly former church and the rather unceremonious firing of the organist we quite liked.

I am Anglican traditionally - interestingly we are also looking at United and other protestant churches in our expeditions.

Today it was a United Church lead by two women.  There was no man who ever lead the service.  Something did not feel right.  My husband said "you must be ecstatic".  I was just trying to get used to it.  It was a wonderful service but the church is very wealthy and I felt it was all "too perfect".  There was not a drop of paint out of place.  It was filled with folks in lovely clothes.  Lots of children.  Very perfect in everyway.  The problem is that I need to see some imperfections from time to time.

Also never did one person say to us "welcome".  There was no exchange of hellos, good mornings and no welcoming smiles.  Very self-controlled.

It's not me - but the sermon/homily was incredible and so was the music.  They have a church school which is important.

Last week we attended a high anglican church.  High anglican comes with what I refer to as "bells and smells".  There is a ringing of a bell and burning of incense throughout the service.  Singing of the entire liturgy and you often miss the words.  You get lulled into a rhythm but walk out without having any meaning added to your life.

Next week - maybe low anglican.  I will let you know.

What do you look for in a church?

Finding a new church is not an easy task.  Mr. Irish and I decided when we moved 20 years ago that we should find a church closer to home.  We were driving past churches in order to worship where we always had.  We visited quite a few churches closer to us, but we just didn't find the right "fit".  For a while we just didn't attend anywhere, that really didn't feel right.  When the dust settled we found ourselves back at the United Methodist church we had always attended.  The people there are "family".  There have been a couple of pastors there that we really didn't care for, but we have found that it isn't the pastor, but the congregation that is important.  Pastors come and go, but the church family remains the same.  At the present time we have a wonderful pastor and as far as we are concerned it is worth the 20 minute drive to be where we feel we should be.

Good luck with your shopping around, I hope you find a place to worship where you feel welcome and comfortable.  There is a place for you so don't give up.  Who knows, you might find yourself back at the original church too.  But at least you'll know that you have looked at other options and that you have made the right choice.

although i was raised baptist, i am now and have been united for the past 8 years...time does go fast...

i have attended five churches in those eight years and worked at all of them...i am currently at a church which i mesh with completely.  i am terribly happy and proud to be there.  finding a church family to belong to is a rather difficult task.  just because a congregation is in a certain denomination, does not necessarily make it the best choice for us...which is what i think addams might have been getting at.  irish is correct, it is not an easy task.  i know this first hand.  ironically, i was just speaking with my roomie about how years ago i took an AIDS buddy course and several years after that, i took a hospise training course...both with the thought of starting an AIDS hospise one day.  while this has not materialized yet, i am now attending a congregation where i use the skills from both programs in terms of ministry and i am ministered to.  i can honestly say that i have met christ rather than just learning about him in the dtes.  i feel i was meant to be here but ohhhh did it take a long time to get here and ohhhhh i would have NEVER guessed that i would go to a school where courses are $900 a piece to learn and gain a passion for the poor.

so addams, i am with you in thought and spirit as you and the addams family  ( :winking: ) look for a church.
