Monday October 14th is Canadian Thanksgiving

Here's a lovely blurb about Canadian Thanksgiving

Canadian Thanksgiving
(from http://www.web-holidays.com)

In Canada, Thanksgiving is celebrated on the second Monday in October. Unlike the American tradition of remembering Pilgrims and settling in the New World, Canadians give thanks for a successful harvest. The harvest season falls earlier in Canada compared to the United States due to the simple fact that Canada is further north.

Harvest celebrations have been around a long time. Ever since the very first harvest, about 2,000 years ago, people have given thanks for a prosperous bounty. The first formal Canadian Thanksgiving was held just over 40 years prior to the pilgrims landing in Massachusetts. An English explorer named Martin Frobisher had been trying to find a northern passage to the Orient.

He did not succeed but he did establish a settlement in Northern America and he did celebrate a harvest feast. This is considered the first Canadian Thanksgiving.

In 1957, Parliament announced that on the second Monday in October that Thanksgiving would be "a day of general thanksgiving to almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed."

During the American Revolution, Americans who remained loyal to England moved to Canada where they brought the customs and practices of the American Thanksgiving to Canada. There are many similarities between the two Thanksgivings such as the cornucopia and the pumpkin pie.

According to one Canadian resource the Canadian table usually features venison and waterfowl over turkey. However, a professor from Durham College tells us that in Southern Ontario eating waterfowl or venison at Thanksgiving has never happened and that the turkey or/and ham is the featured food. Conversely, Lee adamantly states that when he was young "wild duck/goose was always served for Thanksgiving and, if they were fortunate venison as well! This was a common practice in that area at that time."

Thanksgiving Themes

There are three main themes that surround Canadian Thanksgiving: gratitude, the harvest, and family. It's easy to lose track of these things when you are busy preparing a big meal, and the kids are running wild, and the turkey is still frozen, and the dishes haven't been done, and…

Let us offer some suggestions of ways that you and your family can work to recapture the meaning of Thanksgiving, and perhaps start some new traditions.

Gratitude

Work with each member of your family to make a list of things for which they are grateful. Reading the lists before the meal can be a lovely tradition, and saving the lists can create memories for years to come.

Make Thanksgiving last all year long! Try keeping a daily gratitude journal!

Harvest

Canadian Thanksgiving is all about being thankful for a successful harvest. Support your local farmers and growers by buying their products for this special meal!

Shop at Montreal’s public markets!

Family

Thanksgiving weekend is a great time to work on family projects together. This can include working on a family tree, or organizing those family photos into a system you can live with.

A great way to keep those photos organized is a scrapbook. Scrapbooking is becoming more and more popular these days, with many companies offering accessories and products to help you.

I have been looking to learn some different table graces that are easy for children.

My daughter is mastering "god is good, god is great, let us thankhim for this food" very nicely with some quaint word omissions and substitutions based on what she is hearing . LOL.

Here are a few more I found looking for a Thanksgiven Grace.  This excerpt is taken from http://www.annieshomepage.com/thanksgivinggrace.html

Encourage them to speak from their heart and thank God for
what He has done for them this year. They can even sing it.
Don't forget that they can even just use an old
stand by like the following:

An Old Favorite Table Grace
God is Great
God is Good
Let us Thank Him for our Food
AMEN

Another Grace to learn:

"To God who gives our daily bread
A thankful song we raise,
And pray that he who sends us food
May fill our hearts with praise."
~Thomas Tallie (1505 - 1585)~

Grace

Thank you for the world so sweet,
Thank you for the food we eat,
Thank you for the birds that sing,
Thank you, God, for everything!
~Edith Rutter Leatham~

Table Blessing

God, we thank you for this food,
For rest and home and all things good;
For wind and rain and sun above,
But most of all for those we love.
~Maryleona Frost~

Another Grace

Father high in heaven,
All by you are fed;
Hear your children thank you
For our daily bread.

You send sun and showers,
Birds sing overhead,
While the corn is growing
For our daily bread.

I'd like to wish all of my fellow CDN's a Happy Thanksgiving this coming weekend! I know that I have many things to be Thankful for.

I will not be seeing any of my family on Monday. My parents will be leaving the country on the 15th, to visit my Sis and B-I-L in Abu Dhabi. So my Mom had Thanksgiving last Sat. and we could not make it. But..I guess it is about giving Thanks! Sweetie and I are Thankful for each other and we will have our own Thanksgiving dinner, together.
PS He is cooking Grin Cool (Lucky me! Grin)

I hope that everyone has a great day!

God our father

Once again
Once again
I want to say I thank you

Addams.. when I was in grade school we had to say:
Lord, bless this food and drink, For Jesus' sake, Amen.
But when you get a bunch of hungry kids..it sounds more like.. Lor Bless Food and jink..Jeez sake amen.

I was also learned "Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow" similar to KA up-dated version(showing my age)

Happy Thanksgiving to all our Canadian friends! The three "meanings of the day" could apply anywhere, and we all need reminding sometimes what it really is about. Thanks Addams! Smiley

i have had sooooo much turkey this weekend!  it was GREAT!  there were five turkey invites and i made it to two ~ one on friday at noon, missed the friday afternoon one but helped set up, missed the saturday night one, had turkey with my church community on sunday (ohhhh the pistatio stuffing ws to die for!) and then forewent one this evening.  i must say that i have had enough tryptophan for a day or two then i should start taking my tryptophan pills again!  anyway, it was good to have community again this year.  it was my second thanksgiving with first united and i am so grateful for this warm and caring community.  (although i cannot help but think of afghanistan as this time last year they felt the weight of those 23 cruise missiles...i remember how much this pained me last year and still feel those chills...)

downtown, the union gospel mission served 3,000 people turkey today all day long!  i pray that we will remember these people throughout the year.  a friend said that there are 27 christmas meals to choose from at christmas in the dtes...what would happen if we had christmas and thanksgiving meals all year long.  church/organization a, b, c, d, and etc...could spread them out instead of duplicating the same thing at once.  i thought that this was a grand idea.  what about you?

happy turkey day peoples!
