Baby Formula Recall - MANY BRANDS
« on: Nov 2nd, 2002, 10:27pm »

One company Wyeth Nutritionals is recalling it's baby formula which is sold uner many brands. The details are set out at
http://www.cnn.com/2002/US/11/02/fo...call/index.html

It also states that its products are for full term babies and DO NOT use for preemies.

I quote:

"WASHINGTON (CNN) --The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced the recall of 1.5 million cans of powdered infant formula that may contain a pathogen that could be very dangerous to premature or newborn infants.

The formula, manufactured by Wyeth Nutritionals at its facility in Georgia, Vermont, is sold nationally under many different brand names at retail stores and pharmacies.

FDA testing at the Wyeth plant found contamination by a food-borne pathogen called Enterobacter sakazakii (E. sakazakii).

In rare cases, E. sakazakii can cause bacteria in the blood, meningitis or necrotizing enterocolitis, a severe intestinal infection. Those most at risk would be premature infants, newborns or babies with weakened immune systems.

A statement from Wyeth says that its powdered formula is marketed for healthy, full-term infants.

No illnesses have been reported so far, a statement from the FDA said.

Douglas Petkus, a spokesman for Wyeth, said about a million cans had been distributed to stores -- the others were stopped before they got out of the warehouse.

The formula being recalled was manufactured between July 12 and September 25 of this year. It can be identified by the expiration dates on the bottom of the can: 07/28/05, 08/28/05 and 09/28/05.

A six-digit character on the bottom of the cans should alert parents. The first four digits include K12N through K19N, L07N through L30N and N03N through N25N.

Consumers who have bought the affected product can return it to the store where they bought it for a full refund.

hmm, I don't think I've ever heard of a recall on breastmilk.....just one more reason mommies should do it.

I totally understand Rhune, and let me assure you that if I had to go to work, and needed to use a breastpump...I couldn't do it either.   Those things scare me!

I work from home, so that's not an issue, but with my first baby, he was unable to latch on at all, no matter how much we worked with him and with a lactation specialist.  With my second one, he got latched on, but I didn't produce enough milk, so I tried supplementing, but switching back and forth made him horribly sick.  So, ultimately I've had to exclusively bottle feed both babies.

I read a couple years back that aproximately 70% of new mothers have difficulties breast feeding, but most are able to work it out.

Seems us "older" moms don't have as much milk.  Anyway if you ever need advice on breast pumps - addams has tried them all. Oh my, .... where's the picture of the cow icon. Roll Eyes

I appreciate the thought, but he can't have breast milk at all because going back and forth makes him horribly sick.  Maybe someone else out there who's facing this will need advice though. Smiley  My best advice on having used breast pumps myself is not to buy a battery powered one that doesn't have it's own pumping action.  I did that with my first son, and I went dry really fast as a result.

Hi Rhune   I just want to clarify that I didn't mean "you" as in "you Rhune" in my above post, I had intended it to be a ubiquitous "you". Just reflecting on breast pumps leaves me with very mixed emotions.  I am very impressed by what mothers do.  I completely agree that breast milk is not always an option.  It is wonderful we have such amazing choices in formulas now for infants.  This is one area where science really plays an awesome role.

Even with breast feeding I had to supplement for missing vitamins when Kathleen was born premature.  And supplementing is just terribly confusing for everyone.  Of course the neotatologist thinks it's so perfectly easy for a new mom to tape a tube of formula to her breast then hold the formula above her head while at the same time holding the baby in your arms and having them breast feed.   :yikes:  I doubt very much that the neonatologist actually tried to do that 8 times a day.

PS my favourite breast pump is a manual pump made by Avent.  It has a patented design that mimics the response necessary for the milk to let down,  there are no engines running, batteries, motors or other distracting noises.   It's a gem.

I pumped like crazy with my first son till I ran dry about 5 weeks in.  I think the best I used was the Medela hand pump, but I got lazy and was all emotional from post pardum and so my husband bought me an electric to help, I think that one was a "my first years" from like wal-mart or something - very cheaply priced for an electric pump, only it has no pumping action and it caused me to run dry very quickly.  So, while it was convenient in one aspect, it was damaging in another.

This may be a dead issue but, I breastfed for about 6 weeks until I had to go back to work.  I tell you, it was tough.  I used a Medela double electric pump and I loved it.  I rented it from a local medical supply store.  I got to snooze for ten minutes and my nipples thanked me for it.  My daughter had a death grip when it came to latching on.  I felt like I let down all of woman-kind, copping out on the whole natural mother thing.   :baby:
