Why did God create coffee?
« on: Dec 2nd, 2002, 6:20am »

The mysteries of coffee and coffee making continue to evade even the brightest of folks at the Addams family.  We simply don't drink it, never did and have no clue.   :dunce:

This Sunday we are having a Christmas party, :santa: which BTW you all are invited to. If you are in the Toronto area on Sunday December 8th and want to stop by between 1 and 6 please drop me a PM for directions.  There will be music  :guitarist: :drummer: and snacks and drinks (except possibly coffee Wink ) :chef:

We are completely stumped by the coffee issue.  :dunce: all the other details are planned but we tremble   at the thought of making a cup of coffee - so many people like coffee a certain way and I expect novices never get it that way on the first attempt.

My mother even brings her own coffee maker with her when she comes to my home.  Indeed how our coffee drinking parents managed to raise a couple of non-coffee drinkers is beyond me.

I have even extracted caffeine from coffee in the organic chemistry lab but somehow that experience is of no help when it comes to the tremors I get thinking about how we are going to offer coffee to folks

Do we borrow a maker?  buy one?  what kind?  with permanent filter?  paper filters?  what kind?  do we need a second one for decaff?

What kind of coffee do I buy?  What's really delicious?  Will our complete coffee ignorance shine through in the brand we select?  If we get it ground what kind of grind?

Can coffee be ordered in?  do they deliver? I should call Starbucks.

Would it be gauche to just put a couple of jars on the counter by the kettle and say "help yourself"?  :surprised:

As you can see - desperation has settled in and I told Mr. Addams that I would post and see if we could get some help.  All help gratefully appreciated.   :sunny:

LOL Addams, as a coffee lover the first thing I'd say is a big NO to instant.  Wink Better to not offer it at all IMO.

I buy bean coffee (French Roast or Columbian) and grind it in the store. We have a drip coffee maker, so that's the grind I choose. No the filters aren't one size fits all, but if you opt to get a coffee maker it'll say what size you need. It may also come with instructions, I don't know. You say your mom brings a maker with her when she visits, can you borrow one from her and get instructions on how to use it? If you get a maker, get it now and give it a trial run LOL. Of course you need a coffee drinking guinea pig! Grin

I've never ordered coffee, so I have no clue if Starbucks would be a good option, but if so I'd say get a large carrafe instead of a coffee maker and just fill it up. A carrafe can be used for hot or cold and would be useful for other things.

Wish I could blink myself there for your party. I'd make the coffee for you - and have a great time too!

oooooohhhhhhh i so wish i could come.  it sounds like such fun.  i absolutely LOVE coffee but can no longer drink it thanks to my naturopath.   :bigcry:  i seem to be doing well without it though and IF i continue to feel good, i would rather go without it than drink it and feel like poop!

regarding how to make coffee...i never make it in large amounts as i prefer a bodum to a coffee maker.  you could buy a carafe of coffee at your local coffee shop and return the carafe the next day...one with caffeine and then a smaller one of decaf?

just a thought,
love,

Well I guess your mom lives too far away to pop over with her coffee pot LOL. I've been blinking all day, but no luck so far. I sure do wish it would work tho, I'd be there in a ... well, in a blink!  Wink

If you camp, or hunt, or fish, or attend outdoor sports events, you might consider investing in a thermos or two.  They are useful for toting hot or cold drinks that you do consume regularly, and you can take them to Starbuck's or Dunkin' Donuts, and get it/them filled with coffee for the party.  Go for a standard, unflavored House blend.  Any coffee drinker will find it acceptable, and it's easier than trying some exotic flavored concoction that some may not care for.  A thermos of regular and one of decaf would be more than enough effort from a non-coffee-drinking host, and frankly, the decaf drinkers can deal with one cup of the real stuff, or drink something else, realistically.  Wink

Addams, the solution is simple.  Just take a pitcher, thermos, or whatever and pop down to your local Tim Horton's right before you host your party.  Have them fill up the container with their house blend and when you get back home, just keep it warmed in your teapot.

Oh, and while you're there, would you mind picking me up about a dozen DUTCHIES . . . . . I do so LOVE dutchies!!  I would get them myself, but I'm about 600 miles away. . .  Grin

I agree with Eric.  Just buy regular, unfancy coffee.  If someone wants decaf, let them drink water.  Maybe a friend could bring over their coffee maker, and make a pot for you.  Unless you host lots of parties, I wouldn't bother with buying a coffee pot.  Goodness, cabinet space is always a premium commodity.
I wish I could drop in myself, it sounds like a great time.  Unfortunately, I don't know when I'm gonna get to go Christmas shopping a few miles away, much less hop up to Toronto. Sad

Thanks everyone.  what great suggestions.  I think we will either borrow a neighbours or take you up on your suggestion of 'coffee to go'.  That will be the tastiest for sure!  I think I will call and see if they deliver.

Dutchies are the square donuts right?

next time we drive down to Virginia I will bring a baker's dozen just for your Bumper.

Thank you everyone for all your good wishes and most excellent suggestions.  We really could use a thermos.   So that is a good incentive too.

Wish you all could come.  Maybe another time - a forums party in Toronto.  It's possible Wink

Yes, "Dutchies" are the square doughnuts with the white raisens in them.  Just can't find anything like em' down here in the states.  Sorta' remind you of a cinnamon bun, but chewier.
They are what makes a 600 mile drive to visit IN-LAWS, bearable. Wink

Addams, I will be waiting patiently by the side of the road, for your next drive to Virginia.  You won't have any trouble recognizing me, I will be the one jumping up and down with his toungue hanging out! Grin

Umm .... I'm going to post some RL info of mine to let you know that I'm manager at a Starbucks, so I  know my coffee ... lol
And the first thing I have to say is that Liberty is ABSOLUTELY RIGHT about the instant coffee ... YUCK!!  lol
If you live close enough to one, I think the easiest thing for you to do would be to go to Starbucks ... they sell coffee in "travelers" ... the containers are disposable, the coffee's already brewed, and you can get as much as you need ... you can even get cream and sugar there too ... Or, if you want to buy a machine, any employee at Starbucks can help you pick a nice machine out ... or ... if you don't want to spend that much (as Starbucks coffee makers are pretty expensive), you can buy coffee by the pound there ... it comes whole bean, but they'll grind it for you right there ...
Hope I've helped ...

Wow!  Our very own starbucks manager.  Very cool.  I am really warming up to this idea of getting a "traveler" from the Tim Hortons or Starbucks nearby our home.  Do you know if Starbucks sells any fair trade shade grown coffee?
