Wishing everyone a wonderful end of the year, regardless of what holiday they are celebrating (or not at all)!  We're gearing up for Santa over here at my house, which  is kinda fun.  This is the first year my son really got the concept of Santa and we've been having a lot of fun over here with that.

Yes, Virginia, There is a Santa Claus

Editorial printed in the New York Sun in 1897.

Dear Editor---

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says, "If you see it in The Sun, it's so." Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

    Virginia O'Hanlon

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours, man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The external light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies. You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if you did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived could tear apart. Only faith, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God! he lives and lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay 10 times 10,000 years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.

May you and yours be blessed this holiday season.  Merry Christmas to all my cyber friends.

Happy Holidays to you all.  Boy, was it a good one!  Christmas Eve, hubby and I are waiting for the house to settle so that we can set right to work.  Just as we are starting, Lucy wakes up, and is up for 2 hours.  I finally get her to sleep by laying  on the couch with her.  Mack sits in here and plays xbox the whole time.  At 2:20 we actually get started.  By 3 am we are ready for bed.....sure enough 3:45 Kaci wakes us up, she's found her pile of goodies.  Everyone get's out of bed, plays with santa "stuff", we all open our presents from each other, it's a blast(except that it's almost time for the sun to come up!).  At sometime after 5 am, Mack and I actually get to go to bed.  The wonderful part(yes, that was sarcastic) is that I have to go to my inlaws after this looong night.  I think I did pretty well, at not being too bitchy to them.    Now, I'm in here reading the boards and posting at 5 am-ish because I fell asleep yesterday evening at 7.   My house is so quiet, and I am loving the non-interruptions, but I'll probably be needing a nap this afternoon, which I know is an impossibility!  I guess that's how it goes.
I hope you all got more rest than I did. Wink
uh-oh, I do believe Luke is waking up, so much for the uninterrupted, quiet, peaceful computer time.

Oh lordy, that must have been a riot.  Reminds me of hte time the easter bunny was supposed to arrive at my house when I was a kid and I was sooooo excited that I couldn't sleep and I waited in my bed (im)patiently until the sun came up, (oh, 4:30, 5:00 am or so...) and ran out to the living room to find....nothing.  Somehow my parents figured they'd put stuff out in the morning before I woke up instead of just before they went to bed.  I ran into my parents room and burst into tears and told them the easter bunny didn't come.  What a wake up that must have been.  They told me he hadn't gotten there yet, and to go back to bed.  So, I laid in bed again as my parents burst outta their bedroom and rattled paper opening packages, etc. and it was just so obvious that tired people were setting things out and not the easter bunny. Wink  Whooooops.  there goes the easter bunny belief!  So, now that I have kids I have made sure to always set stuff out the night before, no matter what. Wink  I know they'll still figure it out eventually, but maybe not quite so soon.  :devilish:
