Holiday Tragedy

Some neighbors of ours, who are hispanic, went home to Mexico for the holidays.  They have lived here in Texas around 15+ years, and all of their 3 kids were born here.  Well, they were attacked by a gang of thugs, brutally beaten, everything they had with them, including the truck was taken.  We've heard reports that one of them [the family] may have been killed.  The husband is trying to illegally cross back into Texas, so that he can come get papers tp proove that they are all legally allowed to come back.
Goodness, if anyone is planning to be in Mexico, be careful.  I've heard of other people being attacked when getting into taxi's there (especially in resort areas).

This is just awful, and brings back vivid memories.  Sad  Sad

When I was in college in Austin, Texas, a girl from my school went to Mexico with some friends of hers for spring break.  She had been in a car accident not too long before that and was still taking prescription valium for the pain.  While she was down there she had to have her prescription refilled.  So, she went to a pharmacy and had it filled.  The police met them at the door.  Apparently the amount on her prescription was for over the legal amount allowed in Mexico, so the pharmacist phoned the police and then filled it, so that they would meet her at the door and arrest her.  I don't recall how long her friends spent in prison, but I recall it was less time than her, but they still went to prison.  I recall she was there for over 2 years in prison.  She was so ill after she was released that she died 2 weeks after she got home.

Up to that point I had always wanted to visit Mexico, and I tell ya I'm not so hot on that anymore.  There are lessons here... you can't do the kind of things you would normally do when you are there.  You should never drive your own car into Mexico, you should never rent a car when you are in Mexico, you should never have a prescription filled while in Mexico and apparently now you should never take a taxi in Mexico, even in the resort areas.

My thoughts go out to your neighbors, may they make it back home safely - ALL of them!

OMG! Both of those stories were horryifying.  I am so glad I did not drive into Mexico when I was in Arizona, mr. kramer and I contemplated it for fun  :yikes:

I will keep your neighbors in my prayers, chickmama.

They have made it home.  The news was a little exaggerated by the time we heard it, but it was still an awful ordeal for them.  The "bandits" did shoot out the windows of their truck, but no one was hit.  The dad had the sense to let bad guys have their possessions, and the family was pretty much left alone.  The worst part of it was that it was the daughter's 16th birthday.  They were taking all of their christmas presents, plus her birthday presents to the family's to celebrate.  The "Bandits" didn't allow them to keep anything.  The dad was carrying quite a bit of cash to buy things for a big sweet 16 birthday party, that and all identification was taken.  Sadly, their insurance won't pay, since this happened out of the country.  They've had to buy a new car, without any kind of trade-in.  It could all have been much worse, but it's still a sucky way to spend your holidays.

I'm so glad that the family is physically unhurt, but what an ordeal to go through.  I feel especially bad for the 16 year old daughter, I believe in Mexican culture a girl's 16th birthday is a really special occassion.

me too rhune!  a family in vancouver lost their home to fire the day before christmas, presents and all.  the couple had just gotten married two evenings prior and they had a large blended family.  none of them were hurt and they said again and again to newscasters that 'things' could be replaced or done with but family was what mattered the most.

i, too, am glad that all are safe.  to think about what those bandits could have done.  perhaps not.

sending love and peace,

Thanks for sharing this poor family's plight and that they made it "home" ok - sans property but with their lives.

We've all heard the horror stories about travel in Mexico.  I've been there a few times but luckily - never had a problem.  At this point - I don't think I care to visit Mexico again.
