Warning!  A word to the wise.

I received an email message yesterday which for all intent and purposes, LOOKED like an Official eBay email.
It had all the logos, etc., and even had "links" in the message that actually would take you to the official eBay site.

The email message stated that it was a routine security maintaince message, and wanted me to verify my personal information and my ebay password.

As a matter of routine, I do not respond to these messages, so I used my browser (NOT the link in the email message!) to go to eBay and check their "Announcements" page.  Sure enough, the message I received was a fake!!  It's a scam to get your eBay info and password.

A WORD TO THE WISE:  Do not respond to this message should you receive one AND do not even respond AT ALL to the fake message or click on the links in the message.  Better yet, add that address to your BLOCK list!

THANK YOU Bumper.  I do shop using ebay and when you get these real looking messages you tend to believe them.  Although Ebay sent me a reminder that they NEVER ask for this information, I found your message hit home with me more soundly.  The voice of true experience tends to do that.  Thanks for reminding me and others - ASK FIRST before acting, when it comes to strange and unusal email messages and requests.  Don't open it if you are unsure.  Check it out first.  That may save you lots and lots of grief.

i saw a documentary about how easy it is to get corporation's employees to give out their computer passwords...the routine security check seems to be the way...thanks for the reminder bump!

Oh Goodness.  I had better tell my Dad.  He's an avid Ebay buyer, and would probably do anything "they" asked of him.  Thanks Bump!

Just thought I'd bump this back to the first page.

Be careful out there folks, I got another one of those slick "fake" messages from someone claiming to be from eBay again.

also be aware that if you get anything from Paypal telling you that your account is being limited until you click a link, DO NOT CLICK THE LINK...neither Paypal or ebay would ask you to click a link if they need more information from you...they both tell you to LOG ONTO THEIR SITES and update info.

If you receive emails that are asking you to update info or that seem suspicious, immediately forward the ebay ones to:

[email protected]

and paypal to:

I have been getting the ebay ones at least every other day now and last nite got my first paypal one...the paypal one seemed real only cause no one had ever said anything about it and I sure can't afford to have my account suspended..but since I just sold a ton of stuff, I also have a bit of money in my account so I'm really glad that I wasn't so tired that I clicked onto it...
[email protected]

make sure you don't tamper with the email cause they need the full headers to be able to trace who sent it...

Meaness all around.  I just got a message from Yahoo not to open emails supposedly from them as it carries a virus.   (the samples given were "[email protected]," "[email protected]","[email protected]" and "[email protected]" etc.
There's always something!

I think it's easy to not open stuff from people you don't know if you are using e-mail for personal reasons.

I have to pop mail for work, and it somewhere around 12 accounts or so, and so when I get an e-mail titled "hey" or "tech support" I have to click on it, because it could be valid.  9 times out of 10, I end up instead with a pair of boobs poppin out on the page or toner cartridges for sale, etc, etc.  It just drives me nuts.  I do have a firewall up and a couple virus checkers, so most stuff gets filtered out if it has a virus.  I do have to open e-mails from strangers, but I'm not foolish enough to open attachments from strangers, that's the real kicker for viruses.

thanks everyone. I try very hard to delete messages without opening them if I can tell they are not related to me work but like Rhune if they seem work related I am forced to open them.  A firewall is a useful tool.

all very true..cept if you are an ebay user or a paypal user, getting one of these messages looks very authentic. I was sooooo exhausted when I got the paypal one that I almost clicked it..then realized how stupid that was and didn't. I went into paypal's site and found nothing at all about getting spoof letters. Ebay at least has lots of info on their site. I finally sent an email to Paypal and got an automatic response back telling me the spoof address. So I was finally able to forward the whole letter to them with the headers. I would be willing to bet that there are a ton of people who fall for this every day. I have a very good internet friend who fell for the ebay one a few months ago and she lost everything..they got her credit card number, bank account, social number, everything..and she is not a stupid person. She has all but disappeared now cause she is still trying to regain her identity. When it looks like ebay..you just don't even consider that it might not be them.... that is why seeing these warnings on boards and in emails is a good thing...
