Yikes! Question for Computer Wizzes...

I had this message in my in-box this morning....

The M-Web Virus Scanning service has detected the WORM_KLEZ.H virus in an email sent from you to [email protected] on 01/12/2003 06:55:32. Action: deleted.

I have no clue about this. I don't know the address  [email protected] they're talking about, it isn't in my address book and I have no idea who or what it could be! I was afraid this message itself was sending that worm to me, so I copied it, then killed it from my files totally. Any ideas?

PS. I have Norton, which runs every night, and every morning I have a no virus found message. This morning was no different.

:furious: <----- .....my thoughts to hackers!

Someone here might know and understand waaaay better than I what happened on your pooter LB.  I had some strange happenings on mine last night.

I was in the kitchen hearing ping ping ping ping ping coming from my pc.  I looked at my screen which was covered by one message after another that it couldn't open some file (or another) and would I like to open it myself.   :yikes:

I ran my Norton and it scanned some 25,000 files.  I have that many filesHuhHuh?  :yikes:  This took about 1/2 hour but didn't eliminate the pingpingping and msgs.

I shutdown but more of the same.  The second time I started up my pooter, I noticed an odd looking icon down in the taskbar.....and the pinging continued.

I shutdown again.  When I opened again, there was that gross icon but I was at the ready to right-click it and hit EXIT.  It was gone then and the pinging was eliminated.

What in the world was this all about?

And referring back to LB's post - does anyone know where ".za" is located?  Zaire?  Zimbabwa?

CoggyBelle, I have absolutely no helpful virus experience.  My parents are relatively new computer owners, and recently had the same virus on their computer.  They had not activated Norton that had come with the computer.  They are much less computer literate than I am(this is scary).  I had to activate it for them, and when it scanned the computer it couldn't fix the repaired files.  It suggested secluding the infected files, me being barely computer literate; I did as suggested.  That's my complete virus knowledge, or lack of it.

My Norton runs every night tho, and this morning said no virus found. We had that damn worm before, had to have the puter rebuilt, which is when we got Norton, supposed to be the very best, right? It said I had sent the worm TO this addy..

>>[email protected] <<

Also, that addy was a link. I did NOT click on the link, I was scared that it was a link to hack my puter or something, some kind of scam.  Huh

These damn machines are weird aren't they? And scary when you know as little as I do.  :yikes:

M-Web is a major South African ISP, (.za is South Africa).  The M-Web Mail Server, (the 'puter that actually sends and recieves email for M-Web customers) does automatic virus scans on all incoming and outgoing email, (see: www.mweb.co.za/win/specialoffers/virusalert/default.asp) as Norton does on your PC, (if you have it configured that way), and it discovered and deleted one in an email sent to user bjsvh.  Your 'puter is safe and unharmed, Belle.
Worms and Viruses are sophisticated these days, and when they infect a PC they will access the email address book, and send a copy to each address in it, while forging the header to make it appear as though the email is coming from someone else in the address book, or one of their IM "buddies".  This makes it harder to track down the infected PC.

Eric.

Thanks Eric! Smiley I think the only thing I understood in your message was "Your 'puter is safe and unharmed, Belle." but that's the most important thing. Wink
