What's wrong with this picture!

I'm in process of obtaining my Canadian Residency.  There's just sooooo much red tape to muddle through.  Yesterday my daughter with baby Quinn in tow, and I took off for the States.  I needed to get fingerprinted so the FBI can run a "check" on me.....blah blah blah.
 
Leaving Canada to cross into the States, we had our passports at the ready.  The guard took a quick look (10 secs), asked where we were going and why and moved us along.
 
But going back into Canada - they just waved us through.  We had a blanket covering the back window to keep the sun off the baby - they couldn't see into that part of the car.  We could have had who knows what back there.
 
In view of before and especially after 9/11 and the impending possibility of war - I ask you:  what's wrong with this picture?  Color me totally scared and confused.

That is a little frightening.  I suppose two women traveling with a baby (maybe they caught a glimpse of little Quinn) didn't seem to pose a huge threat in their eyes.  But, considering the state of the world today I would think they should trust NO ONE.

canadian plates...i think.
 
going into the states with american plates,  i have experienced much of the same post 9/11.

right after 9/11 (on october 4th to be precise) we travelled to the USA for a vacation.  We were very nervous about crossing the border.
 
We crossed in the USA at Sarnia.   We were asked where we were going and why.  No one asked our citizenships or asked to look at our passports etc which my husband was holding in his hand proferring - they werenot taken.  We were waved along with a have a great time.  
 
They do look for folks of a certain type - for sure otherwise the border would be logged jam.  I don't know what that "typing" is but I do know that when my parents flew to California last month my mother was repeatedly asked to step aside.  Repeatedly asked to empty her purse and repeatedly asked to take off her shoes.  She was so distraught by the constant attention.
 
On one occasion they took her shoes away for 15 minutes and folks were starting to comment.  
 
wingsy - one thing we do know is that it's inconsistent.
I too am very surprised that they didn't ask who was underneath the blanket - those assumptions really should not be made.  It's simple to just ask.  
 
When we returned to Canada we had a lot of luggage in the car and the guard asked if it was just the two of us returning - G said no it's the three of us.  She kept looking in the back and finally said - where is the third person. LOL.  Little W was to little to be seen behind the luggage beside her.  So she stuck her hand up and waved.  At which point everyone laughed and we were waved on.
 
Can't wait to learn when you become landed MzWings - can't wait!  I do hope we meet one day too Wink
