Hair Donation

Well I have been growing my hair for about 2 years now. With the occasional trim.  It all came off this morning.  I now have a 12 inch braid, a good solid 12 inches, maybe a bit longer.

The hair will be donated to Wigs for Kids - they use hair to make wigs for kids who lost their hair due to cancer treatments.  Or another similar charity for adults.

That was the reason I started growing it - in respect of a little girl I knew who died from cancer about 3 years ago. I didn't even know you could do this. Well then I never wanted to do the hair cut thing - but with the trip to the Caribbean coming up soon - it's definitely time to start growing it again.

I am not a picture sort - so there's not any before and after shots.

Most places will take hair that is less than 10 inches and it will be used either for boys wigs (less common) or for selling to support the other work that they do. There is also a market for gray hair - and usually if gray hair is donated it is sold to raise funds to support the program.

They have to cut off two inches in the processing and therefore 10 inches is the minimum they need for making wigs.

here's the websites for some of the organizations that do this:

http://www.wigsforkids.org

And when your hair is unbraided - it'll probably be somewhat longer than that 12 inches.

CoolYou are to be commended for this selfless act addams.   Tongue Kiss

MzWings you have been so supportive of my decision.  thank you.

Thanks for explaining what I was wondering a bit.  Given how long my hair was and how short it is now (yikes it's starting to seem really short LOL) I thought it might be more than 12 inches.  Thanks for reminding me about that.

What a wonderful thing to do addams.  Cool  I'll bet the new "do" is quite stylish and you can feel very good about helping a child through the chemo hair loss.

Addams, this is a wonderful thing you have done. Just think, there will be some little boy or girl that will have hair now and it's because of wonderful ladies like yourself.

Addams, what a wonderful thing!  I was just asking around about this recently, as I have a lot of hair from my last hair cut and saved it when I remembered about those wigs.  Thank you for the links!
