Word of the Day
« on: Apr 10th, 2003, 7:05am »
Quote Quote Modify Modify

The Word of the Day for April 10 is:

henotheism • \HEH-nuh-thee-ih-zum ("th" as in "think")\  • noun
: the worship of one god without denying the existence of other gods

Example sentence:
During certain periods of Egyptian history, the pharaohs and their subjects practiced henotheism.

Did you know?
"Henotheism" comes to us from the German word "Henotheismus," which in turn is derived from the Greek "hen-" ("one") plus "theos" ("god"). Someone who engages in henotheism worships one god as supreme over all others. Max Müller, a respected 19th-century scholar, is credited with promoting the word "henotheism" as a counterpart to "polytheism" ("belief in or worship of more than one god") and "monotheism" ("the doctrine or belief that there is but one God"). Müller also offered the related word "kathenotheism" for the worship of several gods successively.

This has been taken from one of my favourite "word" web sites http://www.m-w.com/home.htm

Defenstration

defenestration • \dee-feh-nuh-STRAY-shun\  • noun
: a throwing of a person or thing out of a window

Example sentence:
Inspector Fry surveyed the scene and asked himself three questions: did the man fall out the window accidentally, did he jump, or was this a case of murder by defenestration?

Did you know?
These days "defenestration" is often used figuratively to describe the forceful removal of someone from public office or from some other advantageous position. History’s most famous defenestration, however, was one in which the tossing out the window was quite literal. On May 23, 1618, two imperial regents were found guilty of violating certain guarantees of religious freedom. As punishment, they were thrown out the window of Prague Castle. The men survived the 50-foot tumble into the moat, but the incident, which became known as the Defenestration of Prague, marked the beginning of the Bohemian resistance to Hapsburg rule that eventually led to the Thirty Years' War.

Cool word - defenestration.  I shall take that word and make it my own, I will, I will.   Wink

And Madame Addams, do we have a word for today?  Methinks you may be a little too busy these days.  May I offer one:

Irremediable adj   Impossible to correct, remedy or repair: HOPELESS

"Senility Prayer"...God grant me...

The good fortune to run into the ones that I do
And the eyesight to tell the difference."

Match the Antonyms - these I find a bit tricky the first time but after a few false starts it starts to come together.

The trick is when you make a mistake pause to look at the correct answers you have achieved so far - then Try again.

My fastest score on this one was 7 rounds with 52 seconds left.  But I had to play several times to get there.  I like playing these more than once because it helps secure the words in my mind.

irenic • \i-REH-nik (with a long "i" in the first syllable)\  • adjective
: favoring, conducive to, or operating toward peace, moderation, or conciliation

Example sentence:
Sasha had always been one of the more irenic students on campus, so we weren't surprised to learn that she had helped negotiate a truce between feuding student factions.

Did you know?
In Greek mythology, Eirene was one of the Horae, the goddesses of the seasons and natural order; in the Iliad they are the custodians of the gates of Olympus. According to Hesiod, the Horae were the daughters of Zeus and a Titaness named Themis, and their names indicate their function and relation to human life. Eirene was the goddess of peace. Her name is also the Greek word for "peace," and it gave rise to "irenic" and other peaceable terms including "irenics" (a theological term for advocacy of Christian unity), "Irena" (the genus name of two species of fairy bluebirds found in southern Asia and the Philippines), and the name "Irene."

Halcyon

well this is a word I never understood very well yet I hear it from time to time.  I am still thinking too about yesterday's word and the beauty in the name Irene.  I really like that name now!

Quote:
halcyon • \HAL-see-un\  • adjective
*1 : calm, peaceful
2 : happy, golden
3 : prosperous, affluent

Example sentence:
Tara claimed to have found the ideal cure for her stress-related ills: a quiet weekend in the halcyon atmosphere of a beautiful country town.

Did you know?
According to Greek mythology, Alkyone, the daughter of the god of the winds, became so distraught when she learned that her husband had been killed in a shipwreck that she threw herself into the sea and was changed into a kingfisher. As a result, ancient Greeks called such birds "alkyon" or "halkyon." The legend also says that such birds built floating nests on the sea, where they so charmed the wind god that he created a period of unusual calm that lasted until the birds' eggs hatched. This legend prompted people to use "halcyon" both as a noun naming a genus of kingfisher and as an adjective meaning either "of or relating to the kingfisher or its nesting period" or "calm."

Popinjay
Quote Quote Modify Modify

[quote]popinjay • \PAH-pin-jay\  • noun
: a strutting supercilious person

Example sentence:
The cast and crew of the production soon learned to ignore the vain arrogance of the temperamental popinjay who was playing the leading role.

Did you know?
Popinjays and parrots are birds of a feather, etymologically speaking. "Popinjay" was borrowed from a Middle French word for "parrot" back in the 1500s, when parrots were rare and were considered exotic. At that time, it was quite a compliment to be called a "popinjay" after such a beautiful bird. But as parrots became more commonplace, their gaudy plumage and vulgar mimicry helped "popinjay" develop the pejorative sense we use today.
