Poor "Old Glory"

I've spent a lot of time on the road the past week and a half.  I have noticed so many US flags that have seen better days still flying.  I have a feeling that most of these tattered and torn flags have been flying since the surge in patriotism after 9/11.  I have seen flags caught in branches of trees, flags caught in gutters on houses, and flags that are coming apart at the stripes.  Some are faded and others are dirty.  
 
Is anyone else finding this in your area?  Don't people know that the flag should be replaced when it becomes tattered and soiled?  I would love to knock on the doors of some of those houses and say...................please give Old Glory the respect she deserves.

Apparently the good folks of the US aren't aware - how sad is that?
 
Yesterday my daughter and I went to the States on business and a bit of shopping.  One of the items to be purchased was an American Flag.  Her Canadian husband wants to fly Old Glory.  I told him he should probably have the Canadian Flag out there too - otherwise, Old Glory might just disappear or become tattered and torn before Her time.
 
While I don't know rules of etiquette for displaying the Canadian Flag, I would imagine they're not much different from those in America.  Whatever they are - let their banners wave!
