Gender

In my psychology class, we are entering the last third of the class, devoted to gender.  To help with background, the class is: Socio-Cultural Context of Psychological Development.

The teacher is being awfully vague about what our gender project should be.  I get the feeling the parameters are pretty wide.  We have two books to read, "Raising Cain" and "Reviving Ophelia".  Nothing else has been outlined, and right now we've been seeing videos and listening to lectures on scientific and sociological differences between males and females.  On Monday, a trans-gendered panel is visiting the class.

One idea she did throw out was that someone could write a "Penis Monologues", to compliment the popular "Vagina Monologues".  She is pretty open-minded and seems to be pleased as long as we put a lot of thought into something.

I would like to do my project on boys.  Since I have one, it interests me the most.  I am working with a young girl in my class.  I initially thought that might be tough, since our experiences are likely to be very different, given the age difference, but now I'm thinking it might add more dimension to our project.  We could also interview people for data, along with research.

I am loaded down with homework right now and don't have time to think about the topic yet, so I thought I'd throw it out on the table and see if I could get any ideas.  Are there any men who can think of attributes to your gender that you think ought to be explored and broached?  Women who have had their curiosity picqued by something about men you'd like to know more about?

I am open to all suggestions and appreciate any input.

i got an idea after some surfing...it is quite timely but it may be a little too timely...the gendering of war, specifically through war games tailored for boys.  i found an article but it takes a while to load.

http://www.sussex.ac.uk/Users/hafa3/war/7.htm  it's quite lengthy.  it's entitled the gendering of war.  there are other articles online about boys' games.  it might make for an interesting paper.

I think too GNS - with the views I find valuable of coggyBelle - she might be able to add to your study.

Spending so much time in the online world, and particularly with teenaged boys (in my online gameing job), I think I'd go with something about the effect or personality online of boys vs girls.  I find that boys in particular are especially agressive online, more so than outside the cyberworld, especially ones that are shy/polite in person.

These are all great ideas.  Thanks, and keep 'em coming.  I get together with my partner on Wednesday and I need to have as many ideas as possible to toss around.

I think what I meant coggyBelle - is that I consider you to be a very informed and savvy lady.

My mom suggests a good one would be on the difference between raising boys who become abusive and ones who don't, and how that develops in them as a product of their environment.

What about a study on why boys seem to care less about tidy homes than girls do on average?

--taking clothes off and dropping them on the floor
--not hanging up wet towels
--leaving the seat up
--leaving dishes undone
--etc.

But the car may be spotless!

Or, fascination with body noises and to even create them to humor others [hand under the armpit/ motion/noise]

Or ability to quote Animal House, Caddyshack, etc.?

Not all boys/men are this way, but enough for Hollywood to satirize it and for us all to complain to our girlfriends about it.

I think a lot traces to how they were brought up but some has to be gender, right?
