Green thumb... not

I have the opposite of a green thumb.  I guess it's black.   Cry  When my grandma passed away, I was offered her prized fern.  It was huge and gorgeous.  She babied it.  I couldn't take it, because I knew I'd kill it and I couldn't handle that.  But, I did take her ficus tree, and of course, it slowly died... well, almost.

I am not exaggerating when I say it had one solitary green leaf on it when I finally sought out some plant food.  I fed him and started calling him Fikey affectionately and willing him to get better.  And he did!  Probably all the plant food, but I'd like to think my nurturing helped.  Wink

Anybody else talk to their plants?  I've heard that coffee grounds in the water, or a diluted amount added to the water help the plants, but I'm not sure why.  Anybody have any planting tips?

oh honey!  i absolutely love plants!  i only have two indoor ones now thanks to all the moving but give me a little time and there will be babies!  see, even i have a mothering instinct.   Roll Eyes

as it happens, i do have a helpful hint....not for the eyes or ears of the weak....the women who lived on the third floor of the house i was in last year used to collect her period blood in a cup and feed her plants with it.  apparently it is high in nutrients....having siad that, i won't be attempting it!   Wink

Well....can I tell you this?  I'm gonna any old hoo.  Several years ago I was having - uh - female probs.  My OB/GYN tried to smooth over what I was dealing with by telling me he "took" his wife's leavings and fed it to their prize winning rose bushes.  This isn't a wive tale - it really works........

Well I've never done anything like that  Grin but I live in a jungle in my living room. I have no idea why plants live for me, but they do. And yes, I talk to them. But then I talk to everything. :laff:

Shocked  I wasn't expecting a tip like that. lol  Exactly how do these women collect it, anyhow?  I am picturing them strapping a cup on to collect it while they wander around doing housework or cooking dinner, and it's not a particularly pleasant vision.

I'm sorry, but that's just gross! Lips Sealed  I want this picture outta my head!
GNS, I had a ficus tree in my old house.  I bought him while we were building, he was about 5 feet tall.  He had grown to about 12 feet by the time we sold the house, and had completely overtaken my sunroom.  I let the new owners adopt him, because he was very, very picky.  If anyone bumped or shook him, the  next day he would shed almost alll of his leaves.  I found out that ficus trees are bad about this, so I took measures to make sure he wasn't bumped.  Just thought I would give you my :twocents:

Shocked OMG K-A - I had no idea about those things....

The majestic ficus can be more than a little finicky.  The first one I had was so beautiful when I brought it home.  The next day it was weeping its leaves to I moved it to what I thought was a better location in the room.  Then the next day I moved it again and within 5 days the poor thing was totally nekkid.  I called the nursery and they told me to leave it where it was - and to not even move the air around it.

Within one week, it showed signs of rebirth and so I left it alone.  When we sold our house some 12 years later, we took it with us and Ficie went nekkid again.  He recovered again and lived for many many years.

One of the best plant fertilizers I found, are dried rabbit pellets.  The plants turn a rich dark green and become very lush.

When we let our rabbits run around the front yard the spot they chose for their droppings was always the lushest.

BTW the best fertilisers  for rose bushes are placentas..
I sure didn't take any home though!

You're right though Zel - anything "blood" is great for roses.  My mom used bloodmeal and she produced some prize posies....

EEG, thanks for the links.  Wink  Who knew there was a whole segment of society that thought absorbancy was bad.

At the risk of grossing you out further, Rhune... isn't there a religion or nationality, or something, that takes the placenta home after a birth and eats it either as a delicacy or tribute or something (<--obviously I don't know much about it. lol)

Now, bloodmeal, I've heard of!  That sounds like a viable option.  I have no bunnies leaving pellets in my yard, but I do have deer.  Still, I'm not going to run around half an acre searching for their droppings.

No one else has heard the coffee thing?  I quit drinking coffee and still have a bunch in the house.  I thought it might be a productive way to get rid of it.

I have heard of coffee making the leaves dark green.
I have also heard of people taking home the placenta and cooking it and eating it, they even invite guests over for supper.   Oh lordy, my mouth is watering...from nausea!  I'm gagging!  Gross.
