Late this afternoon when I was on my pooter - I smelled something odd and went outside to investigate. It smelled strong out there so I continued what I was doing.

A few minutes later my fire alarm activated and as I raced down the hall I saw the glow of fire in the bathroom - the baseboard heater was ablaze.

I looked down and already had the phone in my hand so I dialed 911 and the operator took my address and told me to go in the hall and pull the Emergency Alarm.

I had Wings covered and could have rolled him outside if necessary. I ran toward the front entrance and saw the firetruck and wondered where the firemen were. The had come in the back door and were there when I ran back into the building.

They couldn't locate where the acrid odor was so I explained the situation. The acting manager turned off the heaters in my apartment. Everyone left but the manager asked me if it would be ok to have an electrician stop by later. Would it be OK? Duh! lol

Thank God I was home when this happened. I'd hate to lose my "stuff" but to think of Wings burning to death...... Anyway - I think we received a blessing today - me 'n Wings.

Oh my MzWings I was so shocked to read your message. You did all the right things and thank the good lord you were home. Oh I am still shaking at the thought so I can imagine how you must have felt.

baseboard heaters are so dangerous. I really dislike them. If anyone here has them please do not let your curtains or drapers anywhere near them. I know that MzWings occurred in the bathroom but I still think of a nightmare story of a poor fellow asleep on his couch then the drapes lit on fire behind him because of the baseboard heater.

You did so well to call 911 and I hope that the electrician checks out ALL of the heaters in your apartment. Big hugs and thank goodness you and Wings are safe.

OMG..that is just awful but thankfully you were home and not babysitting today!! I would have been so heartbroken if you had lost Wings to a fire...Pretty Girl has tugged at my heart strings after only a few short months so I can't imagine losing your friend of 15 years..

Thanks for your prayers everyone. I think if I hadn't been on Paxil, I might not have done all the right things in the correct order. When I mentioned that I had the phone in my hand - I don't even remember picking it up. I guess that was automatic.

The electrician came and dismantled the heater in the bathroom. OMG! It was filled with Lego pieces and other "stuff" which we couldn't figure out what they were, because they were melted and blackened. The electricity to the heaters is still off because of the danger. The other heaters will have to be inspected because more than likely, there could be Legos (or whatever) in them. The electrician said the damage to that heater is such that it will have to be replaced.

I'm going to suggest to the manager that perhaps all of the suites heaters should be examined. There are lots of little kiddies throughout this complex.

This morning I thanked the Lord that I was home and that I saw the light of this new day with my precious Wings.

I'm glad all the heaters will be checked out. I had an off the wall thought about Wings......what if he started shrieking like a smoke alarm or fire engine? If that's the worst that happened, I think you'd still be thankful. I am curious though, about how he was acting during all this, or was he covered when it started?

I was in process of covering him during the call to 911. He has a large cage that's on casters. I needed him to be covered because he was freaking and that's the only way to calm a bird.

Thanks for that info. I'm going to make sure a safer model(s) is installed. Not only that, when the regular Manager returns from holiday - I'm hoping she'll send out a memo to all residents to check their heaters for foreign objects. Or better still, I think each and every one of them should be professionally inspected well before the winter season returns.

Having rented for years, it is unlikely they will replace the heaters or even bother to check the ones in other units. All of that costs money and a fire is covered by insurance if it happens. It's certainly possible the people who own your place are better than that, but my experience has been they won't lift a finger to spend a dime beyond what they have to.

The electrician came this morning to install the new heater - period. As he was preparing to leave, I asked him if he would check the other heaters but he said it wasn't on his "orders". Seems likely to me there could be other Legos or pieces of who-knows-what in the other heaters. He seemed apologetic but told me I could ask the management to have this done at a later date. Believe me, I shall be doing this. Wink

Mzwings - put your request in writing. Therefore if there is a problem in the future at least you have documented the written request. It can be businesslike and brief - but to the point.

Glad at least that you have a new one without all the additional items.

I am going to ask Husband to inspect all of ours. We don't use them and since we don't - heck why not just get rid of them.

Why keep the ugly things if you're not using them? lol They take up needed wall space like crazy - geesh. Plus, if they're not completely disconnected, might they be a fire hazard?
