This temple is only a 15 minute walk from my house but until today I did not know the treasures that it held. My husband and I have supported Tibet and Tibetans for at least the last 10 years of our lives and we speak out against the takeover of Tibet by China.

Even about our politics though, this temple, is the first authentic recreation of a Tibetan temple in Canada. the Statues in the Toronto Temple are the first of their kind to be made here in the west in the authentic Tibetan traditions.

The invasion of Tibet in 1959 by China and the destruction of the riwoche monastery resulted in the complete destruction of 100,000 statues that had been sculpted over 800 years. Once all 90 statues are completed, the Toronto Temple will be home to the only complete collection, in the world, of statue images of the 50 masters of the Dzogchen lineage and 40 masters of the Taklunng Kagu lineage.

The temple library contains books from the 13th century.

(K-A can a person be a buddhist and a christian at the same time?)

Addams, how I would love to go with you! The takeover and destructin of Tibet is near to my heart as well. So much was destroyed that can never be replaced. Sad

We have a Hindu Temple here, just completed about five years ago. They don't yet have all their statues, but they often have wonderful programs (sitar players, dancers, etc.) which I really enjoy. A real Puja is an interesting experience as well.
