Hemodialysis Advice Needed

I could use some help and support.  My elderly father was recently placed on hemodialysis.  He has been facing kidney failure for some time now and has finally been forced to go on hemodialysis.  I am trying to learn all I can about the procedure and the care of the hemodialysis patient.  I was wondering if any of you have had any experience at all with this.  What I really need is help with  the diet.  The people at the hospital and the dialysis center have been helpful, but I think sometimes it is more helpful to talk to someone who has been closely involved with a patient or has been a patient themself.  Does anyone know of a cookbook with recipes for dialysis patients?  Do any of you have any recipes?  I'm trying to help my mother figure all of this out.  She is overwhelmed by the entire situation and afraid she is going to give him something to eat that he shouldn't have.  She has information from the hospital, but she is very unsure of herself.  I told her I would make out detailed menus for her for two weeks and we'll go from there.  If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

I wish I did. I used to work with a man years ago who's wife worked with the dialysis all the time. I just never seem to have time to go catch up with them though so I haven't talked to them in years. She probably could have given you some advice. I will email them in hopes that their email still works. I'll get back to you.

My dad died ultimately of kidney failure. It is an awful thing and even worse to sit there for 2 days and watch someone you love die and not be able to do anything about it other than to hold his hand.

I pray that your father can handle this and will be okay. I will keep him and you in my prayers.

Some words of wisdom from someone how has lived with kidney disease for 30years.  Note that she distinquishes a hemodialysis diet from other types of diets for other kinds of kidney treatments or ailments

The National Kidney Foundation has a list of cookbooks.  Hopefully you can order one that is suitable through their website.  Or call them and talkwith someone there about what might be the best one for your family's needs.

This Nephron Informaton Site looks to be helpful

Quote:
So the solution is to eat enough protein to maintain health, but to minimize the excess amino acids and spare the kidneys. The way to do this is to eat foods with proteins that cause the least waste, that is, foods that have the right amounts (ratios) of different amino acids that the body will use most efficiently. Since we are animals, foods that come from animals (dairy foods, eggs, meat, poultry, fish) have the best combination of amino acids and produce the least waste- the "high biologic value" or HBV foods. [For a while, there was a marketing campaign calling eggs the "perfect food". That was because the ratio of amino acids in eggs is very close to the ratio that the human body needs and have an HBV of nearly 1.0, which is the ideal.]

A free brochure from Abbott Laboratories

What Is This Thing Called Phosphorus? A Patient Guide to Controlling Phosphorus
The booklet is available free by calling Abbott Laboratories Renal Care at 1-800-323-0855
Registered dietitian Carol Bergen, M.S., wrote this 9-page illustrated booklet to help renal patients understand the importance of controlling phosphorus. I hope this works for you, your family is in my prayers.  I can probably access some more information from work if you have anymore specific questions.

I also have a recipe for people who cannot tolerate liquids without adding something called "thicket"  which basically thickens the liquids to whatever consistency the person might need.  If anyone wants the link for this let me know.

Peaceful thoughts to you all

My thoughts and good wishes are with you.  I don't know anything about this, and it looks like there is some good stuff posted here, so I can't add anything about the diet, but I wanted to add my good wishes and thoughts.

I so wish you and your mom and especially, your dad all the best on this latest situation, IL.  I am so sorry for all he's going through and I wish I could help.  Seems like we've got lots of knowledge flying hot and heavy here.

Prayers and lots of love to you!   Tongue

my other mother is the head nurse of a kidney dialysis unit.  i will call her and see if she has any suggestions.  i know from visiting her at the unit that cutting down salt is one of the most important things.

Thank you all for your help and support.  Addams, I have checked the links you found and there is some good information there.  Azure, I checked out your link as well.  Dar and EEG, I'm touched that you are going to the trouble of contacting people you feel might be of help.  Rhune, LibertyBelle, and Wingsy your support is so appreciated.  The people here are THE BEST. :grouphug:

I am meeting with the dietitian at the dialysis center on Monday.  Hopefully, she will be able to answer my questions and get me on the right path.
