copying from Chatter so if you already read it there..it is the same.

As some of you know, I used to own 1 Yahoogroup and be an active part of another. The people who USED to be my friends of the two of them, used to be kind enough to send emails to my mom now and then to keep her spirits up. Since MOST of these people turned out to be asses and were only doing it to make themselves look good, she no longer gets any emails from them. I have found that she seems very down about that and now that I have made a few friends on this board I'm wondering if anyone would be interested in writing now and then to her to try to help get her spirits back up. Now this seems a lot more difficult than you think. If you just introduce yourself and babble on about yourself, she will respond to you. It might not be the same day but this woman NEVER used to email ANYONE including ME and then when she started to get these emails, suddenly she was writing emails all the time. Her typing is not the best but readable. Her humor is very dry but once you get to realize that, she is extremely funny. I just have a feeling that this is part of the reason she is allowing herself to feel so down. She used to average about 5 emails a week from these people and now that I am not longer welcome in the group and have shut my own group down, they stopped writing to her.

Anyway..if people would agree to do it, I would gladly set up an email that can be used from the board and I would so be ever appreciative. Anybody??

Thanks Azure...I decided not to bother setting up an email..I will send anyone who is interested in doing this a private message with her email. I have a few people from Chatter so it is okay if no one is interested here. I just thought I would try..and I know a lot of you are busy..so no big deal!!

Dar,

I'm afraid I am a terrible pen-pal.  I am much too busy to get the stuff I need to get done most weeks, so I'm not going to volunteer myself up.  I'm sure she is a wonderful person and worth writing to, but trust me, I'll only disappoint her cause I'll take too long to reply, etc.  I would like to make a suggestion though...

If your mother is lonely and looking for some correspondence on the web, why not introduce her to an online community like we have here?  I know this is your refuge and it's a place you come to talk about what's going on and unburden some here, so I am not suggesting THIS site for her, but something similar...a smaller community with nice people, who have common interests with her?  I bet if we put our heads together and looked around we could find a nice community like this that is people he own age, or similar interests that she could relate to and enjoy talking to, and she wouldn't have to wait all week to get a reply, she could spend a little time each day if she wanted to...?

Thanks Rhune..she won't do that though..it is a nice thought. She pays a fortune for her phone..even though I cover the internet access charge..the phone bill kills her each month cause they don't have unlimited access in VT so she pays for each minute she is online. Unfortunately, I just can't afford to take over her phone bill though I have taken over her long distance part. Therefore, she just spends 15 minutes or so online. And no..I love her but I won't get into any community that I'm in...I just couldn't handle her reading my concerns and knowing how I really feel.

Dar, I would be happy to email your mom.  I do not get on the computer everyday though, so if you think it would not be good for her to only have me email once or twice a week; just let me know.  I would hate to disappoint her.

are there not any free internet options?

My mother joined a couple rooms through yahoo (odd thought for me, my mom hanging out in a chat room) I am sure they would love to have her.  Can she try juno or something?  Or I know KMart used to supply internet service too.  Might be a good support to her.

I have no problem emailing her though, I should get a chance sometime tomorrow

Peace!

I guess I'm not being clear. The internet bill is paid for by me.....has been since the day I bought the computer for her.

Her phone company however charges her to be online. Every minute she is online costs her so many cents with them. Her usual phone bill has gone up 30.00 since she has had the computer and she probably only averages about 10 hours a month at most online.

I certainly do not expect anyone to email her every day. Whenever you have a chance to drop her a line would be wonderful!!  I will pm you with her address.

this makes absolutely no sense to me when you are already paying for an internet plan.  help me understand.  the reason why we pay for internet plans is for telephone dial up time...why the double cost....i am so confused.  i better stop thinking about this as i already have the start of a migraine!   Lips Sealed

I believe what she's saying is that the phone company charges her for use by the minute, regardless of whether she's on the internet or not.  She has some kind of phone plan with some company that she pays for her service by the minute, not by the month.

Dar, is this because she's using cellular service or something instead of a landed line?  Are there cable modems available in her area?  For $30 a month you can get a cable modem with most companies that does not use a phone line at all and is connected to the net 24 hours a day for use.

okay...I think it is starting to make sense to some of you..Vermont is a very behind the times state. They only got ATM machines in 3 years ago..making more sense now?

Her internet server is a dial up. There is no such thing as cable, dsl or anything else where she is and services like AOL, Juno or MSN don't even have local access numbers so she would need to pay even more for a long distance phone call if she was on those.

When I first decided to buy her the computer after Dad died, to give her something to take away the lonliness..I did some looking to find an internet server. Luckily one had just entered the state of VT and had set up local access numbers for every single town in VT. It is not the best internet access and I curse at it all the time cause I get knocked offline a lot when I'm using it but at least she has SOMETHING. Anyway..cause it is a dial up connection, she has to use her phone line for it.

VT has this wonderful plan..it is called (hell I don't know what it is called) but basically you pay 35.00 a month to have about 3 hours call units (this is really not actual call time, it is a timer and if you go over the timer, they start charging you more money) These units are for everytime the line is opened, whether it is someone calling you, you calling someone else, faxing something, internet service, etc etc etc. Sooooo how many of you don't ever use a phone more than 3 hours a month? Now you see the problem. (Hopefully) She always went a little over her time but now with the internet, she is over even more which makes her average bill around 50 - 65 dollars I think the last time I checked.

So until some sort of politician comes in (way after mom is gone I'm sure) and makes VT be as fair as other states...everyone is screwed out of a lot of money on their phone use there. I got mom a cell phone recently which is helping a little but the service is sketchy up there since it comes from my service so she can't always use it. I couldn't afford it if she did, with all her Avon customers calling her all the time.

Anyway...thanks again to anyone who offered to do this. I have pm'd each of you..so let me know if you didn't receive it. I have several people from Chatter and a few people here and all in all..even one person will help bring her spirits up right now so that is what is important.

Ok - now you've confused me Dar.  As I said at SC - count me in as a "penpal".   Are you or are you not going to set something up for us to contact her?

OR - would you rather us pm you with a note attached for your mom?
