What Are The Odds?
« on: Jun 26th, 2003, 11:03pm »

What are the odds of this happening?  My son in law and my other daughter's boyfriend both got speeding tickets yesterday in the same county at different locations and at different times.  Both guys have gone for years without a ticket and it seems their luck ran out in Tipton County, Indiana.  SIL was on his way to work yesterday morning and was clocked at 70 in a 55.  Boyfriend was clocked at 80 in a 55 last night on the way home from our house.  He was really ticked because he got behind an unmarked car that was puttering along at 51-53 mph.  He decided to pass and when he did, my daughter noticed it was the "law" :cop:, but it was too late.  If anyone is passing through Indiana this summer, remember to obey the speed limit or be very observant.  Wink

Anyone else feel like they have ever been "set up" for a ticket?

Sorry Irish, don't mean to be argumentive but I would like to respond to a couple of points.  First, I think you are correct in your statement that they "had gone for years without a ticket and it seems their luck ran out."  Happens all the time.  If someone has a propensity to exceed the safe posted speed limit, sooner or later, that person will meet an Officer whose JOB it is to enforce those laws.  As for the violations, it's not like it was only a couple miles per hour over the limit, 15 mph over the 55 mph limit can hardly be called a "mistake".  Being late for work is hardly a reason to jeapordize the safety of the OTHER innocent people out there on the road.  As for the other violation, 25 mph OVER the limit is considered careless and reckless driving in many states.  I would advise him not to go into court and tell the Judge that he decided to accelerate 25 mph over the limit to pass a law-abiding citizen "poking along" at close to the legal speed.  If he does decide to use the defense you stated in your post, I suggest he carry his toothbrush to Court with him, he might not be going home.  Matter of fact, if I was the parent of a daughter whose boyfriend had so little respect for the safety of his passenger girlfriend that he would speed 25 mph OVER the speed limit, he wouldn't be taking MY daughter anywhere!

The "law" can hardly "set someone up" by driving the posted speed.  If these two fellows feel like they were "set up" and "tricked" into driving 15 and 25 mph over the speed limit, well, they need to do a LOT of growing up!  The "law" didn't push down that accelerator, and they have no one to blame but themselves.  When it was my job, I used to caution people who were in similar situations as these two fellows, that if they continued driving fast, ONE DAY they were going to meet someone who was also making bad decisions and in just as big a hurry as they were!  They're called ACCIDENTS.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm definitely not a saint behind the wheen either.  I can bend a speed limit with the best of em' sometimes.  BUT, I'm the one in control of that accelarator, no one else!  And I'm the one to blame if I break the law, not the cop enforcing the law. OK, I'm down off my soap box.  Sorry, but I just get a little annoyed when the talk turns to thinking that Law Enforcement has to "set up" someone to write a ticket.  There is enough complete and utter disregard for the traffic and safety laws out there in today's society that a traffic cop could write tickets until his fingers fell off.

heh, I got pulled over doing 115 in a 55 on my bike and got no ticket because I was late for work :tongue2:.  Needless to say that was the last time I went that fast because I was so scared that I was going to jail and my bike was going to get impounded.

I will never forget the time when I was still managing the Donut shop and had to drive up Wednesdays (my one supposed day off..which actually meant I didn't have to be there at 4:30am..just by noon) and they were having road construction just before my turn off on the highway. I was following a whole line of traffic that was speeding cause of a construction zone.otherwise we wouldn't be. Well I was at the tail end and I was leaving an appropiate space between cars. The cop jumped in front of me and stopped me and gave me a ticket. I asked him how it was fair cause I wasn't the only one speeding and he said I was the easiest to catch. He did admit that it wasn't fair and said that he could give me a Construction speeding ticket for 300.00 but because he felt bad, he would give me a normal one for I think 90 bucks or something. It seems that I am always getting busted..yes I do speed a lot but my neighbor is the worse and she has NEVER gotten a ticket. I'm scared to ride with her some days cause she is almost always 20 miles over the speed limit but somehow her luck is better than mine. AND I have been in accidents....BUT not one of them was due to speeding.

ITA with Bump.  "Odds" or "luck" has nothing to do with being ticketed if one is speeding.  "Sour grapes" because others you know speed more than you do but you're the one who gets a ticket - is just that - "sour grapes".  My dad always used that excuse and came close to losing his life because of "the other guy."

When I think back to the days when I was a speed demon - it gives me the shakes.  I could makes all kinds of excuses but speeding is speeding and I rec'd more tickets that you could shake a stick at.  I deserved every one of them.

Here in Winnipeg (as in many other cities), there are cameras set up all over at stop signs and signals.  When one receives that document in the mail, with pix of your vehicle, date/time/license # and speed - you pay the fine poste haste - you don't have a case to fight.

I won't sit here and blatantly state I'm a perfect angel behind the wheel.  I will state though, that I watch the speedometer like a hawk and slow it down if I'm 5 mph over the limit.  I'm proud to say it has been 20 years since my last speeding ticket.  *pats self on back*

I also have to agree with Bumper.  Well, said my man. Cool
I have never gotten a speeding ticket.  It's not because I don't have a heavy foot, it's because of that lovely little button called a cruise control.  I use mine everyday.

Well, I havent gotten a speeding ticket in 32 years, and up until the last couple years, i didn't speed. Now that I commute to the big city from home, I find myself being aggresive like the other drivers, and if there is a chance to speed up i take it im sorry to say....70 in a 60, when its usually 40 in a 60. I know I shouldn't and if I do get stopped, it will be no ones fault but my own. I am trying to watch it tho, cos my hubby and kids call me their personal NASCAR driver LOL  Embarassed

Officer Bumper, I thought you might have some thoughts on this.  Wink  The young men in question are well aware that their tickets were issued because of thier actions.  The problem in this situation is the reputation of the county in question.  It is a rural, farming community (don't get me wrong, I have total respect for farmers, I am a farmer's daughter) and the "law" is notorious for their traffic stops.  We live in the county just north of the one in question.  Our local newspaper ran a story on this in the past and in the "Sound-Off" column it has been the object of several comments.  The sheriff's department there is kind of a combination Keystone Cops/Barney Fife operatioin.  It is departments like this one that give the good ones a bad rap.

As for the "boys" in question, they are prepared to pay their fines without a fight and know they were in the wrong.  As for telling my daughter not to get in the car with her boyfriend...........................she is 29 years old,  I quit telling her what to do quite a few years ago.  I have been a passenger in the car when her boyfriend has been driving and he is a very good driver.  I was quite comfortable with him at the wheel.  Like most of the rest of us, he just has a heavy foot now and then.

Oh, and for the record, it has been 23 years since my last speeding ticket.  Mine, too, was issued after a pass and I was clocked at 72 mph.

Bumper, you can climb on that soap box when ever you want.  I enjoy your perspective.

I almost forgot................What are the odds of this happening?   The guys have the same court date at the same time with the same judge.

Well Irish, I can't quote you the exact odds, but I would suspect that it's really not that unusual a circumstance.  I would bet that since both fellows got their tickets on the same day, that both of the officers are on the same shift.  Many Departments assign Court days for the Officers so that no one particular docket day will be overloaded, or it could be a case where certain (traffic) offenses are only heard on specific days and they HAD to assign all the summons to that date.   My guess is that all the summons those two officers wrote that day were set for that particular Court day.
