whales and Puffins

Well as promised...I am going to share the few pictures we managed to get. It turns out that when I downloaded my digital pictures..they actually did show up..not sure why they don't show up well in the LCD screen but I stopped taking pictures cause I didn't think they were working. The eagle unfortunately did not show up so maybe James throw away camera will have a decent one of that. James did a great job getting a shot of  a puffin flying..I was so shocked..I have never been able to do this. He also got a decent one of three in the water at once. Keep in mind again that Puffins usually hide from the boats so this was all very rare and very cool. I'm so proud of him for being able to get such good shots. I was disappointed in the whale shots though so I included two from a whale watch a couple of years ago. Hope you all enjoy...

all the whale pictures that I'm sharing are humpbacks..they are the most graceful and and the easiest to get a good picture of in the oceans near me. I have some of the finback and the minke and you basically only ever get to see the dorsal fin and that is about all. They don't show their tails and they don't jump. It actually has been a long time since I have seen a whale do a full breach out of the water...

This was a really good shot cause the whale was heading on a deep dive after some fish and wasted no time keeping its tail up for a picture.

This one is disappointing cause you just never know if they are heading on a deep dive and will be going down before you get a full fluke or not...in this case if James had taken a chance and waited another second..he would have got one of the most awesome fluke shots I have seen in awhile..I got to witness it instead of taking a picture of it..it was incredible.

These two pictures are from a couple years back when I took 2 co-workers..I am hoping that I can find more film that hasn't been developed cause I still think I got better pictures than this. This whale was the most incredible whale I have ever had the pleasure to watch. He kept coming to the service and hanging around on top watching us and then would dive catch a fish and bring it back to the surface, and open his mouth to show it to us. He was just incredible and I'm disappointed that the film I had found doesn't have any of these incredible shots cause in all my whale watching years..I have never seen a whale like this and no whale has ever wanted us to see his mouth.  So I'm sharing a couple of them for those who have never seen a whale...he was so close to the boat in the full body one that we could have almost touched him and we did nothing to make him stay there..he came to us... Cool

This next one shows the first thing I ever learned...you have to watch for the blow... LOL. A whale will blow as it is surfacing and when you go whale watching..you have to look for this little spout of water to find the whales. No, there is not a sonar that will tell you where whales are..the sonar can only tell you where bait fish is that the whales eat...it is up to you to find the whales which is why we didn't do well this time cause the visibility stunk and you need good visibility in order to see them in a distance and go to them.

Hope you enjoy them!!

Great pictures, I like it.  Actually I was hoping you'd have pictures of dolphins.  LOL.

no dolphins spotted on this trip Affan..sorry..

We did see many porpoises but they are very shy animals and by the time you realize it is there..they have already ducked back down into the ocean. I have only seen dolphins on two whale watches..the first one the captain let them play with the boat for a few minutes..the second one the captain ignored they were there so I only have pictures of the one time.

Thanks to both Azure and Afran for liking my pictures...

I didn't want to say this wrong so I goggled for the correct answer:

"Dolphins and porpoises are so similar that it is easy to confuse which is which.
In general, porpoises are smaller and plumper than dolphins, rarely reaching lengths of more than 6 feet and weights of more than 300 pounds. They have a rounded head and a small, triangular dorsal fin. Porpoises lack the "beak" characteristic of most dolphins, having a blunt snout instead.

Most species of dolphins have long, streamlined bodies, with a distinct pointed beak and a prominent dorsal fin with a curvature toward the tail. Their size varies from 4-26 feet with weights ranging from 70-1,500 pounds. Their teeth are sharp and cone-like in shape, in contrast to the spade-shaped, laterally-compressed teeth of the porpoise"

Now in comparison to whale watching and spotting dolphins and porpoises..it is VERY easy to tell the difference because dolphins love to show off and love the attention from the boat. If you see dolphins and allow them to approach you..which they WILL, they will come to the swell of the boat and play in it, jumping and just having a good time. Dolpins are usually always in groups too...very social animals. Porpoises rarely are seen in groups...very solitary type creatures that you see only 1 of unless she has a calf which we saw a lot of this last time. I had actually never seen a porpoise before going this time..since they are so allusive but this time I must have seen at least 20 if not more. They do not show themselves cause they want to..they show themselves cause they had to breathe..you see the head for 2 seconds at most and then the back with  the dorsal fin and they immediately dive back to the ocean and get away from you as quick as possible. Dolphins on the other hand will pick their heads out of the water to watch you and will "talk" to you if you stay with them. Dophins are like humpback whales (very curious and very unafraid) and porpoises are like minke whales in that they would rather just be left alone.

as for pictures Arfan...you will have to be patient...those pictures were from my very first whale watch and that was and that was about 10 years ago. I have no clue where they are stored and really don't find myself with a lot of extra time right now to look. Thanks for your interest though. Good to see someone else that likes dolphins. I have been disappointed that I have only really seen them once and the second time we should have spent time with them cause they are a huge hit with whale watchers but that was the boat we went on that was just out for money and they wanted to make sure we saw whales so we couldn't ask for our money back. We saw the dolphins less than 30 minutes from shore and they just weren't gonna waste any time with them even though my friend and I banged on the cabin and pointed to them. Not one other person on the boat saw them cause there the naturalist was too busy yacking it up with the captain and didn't narrate at all the whole trip...in the end we took over telling people what to look for and pointing out all the neat sea creatures we were seeing. DON'T EVER GO WHALE WATCHING OUT OF CAPE COD, MA.
