health care career advice pls....

hi all! i need some advice from various perspectives. i'm currently on a hiatus after being a nurse for close to 5 yrs. in the meantime, i'm currently looking for a job. no matter how i hunt, i tend to find a job close to healthcare.

i'm actually debating either going into research or disease control. well, as more diseases are sprouting up, more medical research needs to be done in order to deem the medicine to be safe for consumption, therefore, research nurses are needed.

also, within the recent SARS outbreak, we know that the world is no longer safe and that we can't afford to be complacent. therefore, i really hope to play a part in disease control.

now, i may not get either job, but i'm interested in both areas. what are your opinions? i would like to hear your advice so that i can weigh it. pls.. pls...

My best advice would be to get out a piece of paper and make a list for each one, all the advantages and disadvantages.. weigh them out, ask yourself if you think you'll be disappointed if you give up each one individually.  I'm guessing that inside there's one that appeals to you more than the other.  Both are important fields and probably would be satisfying to you, you just need to figure out which one has that little bit of extra appeal to you.

yep, the list thing works wonders.  Thats what I did when applying for the current position last year which meant leaving the job I had loved for 12 years behind.

A list with both pros and cons for both or all job is the way I would say to go.

Good luck to you  Cheesy

Talk to someone already doing what you want. Ask them about Job skills you will need education demand for this type of work etc. All the advice I seen thus far for you is excellent I suggest as stated go directly to the source ask someone who is already working in this area

One of the best ways to find out if somethign is for you is to try it out - now with this you can't exactly do that - but see if you can shadow someone in the field for a few days.  Do this for both options and then you can make a more accurate list of the pros and cons.  Being "on the job" will allow you to see both the good and bad points of a job that may not come up when just talking to someone!

The whole job-shadow thing has become really popular here...really helps you figure out if its the right path for you to follow or not...I know with the program I'm in in school right now (Human Resources) it's actually built right into the program!

wow! that sounds like a great idea! i'm not very sure if it's allowed in sg. i do know students are able to do that as an attachment stunt, but as an adult, it may be difficult as companies will allow you into their area only when you have actually signed on the dotted line. i think they don't want to waste resources.. sad but true!

i feel so blessed to hear all these advices! thanks!

With shadowing, you aren't really "doing" the work - jsut observing.  Usually the way to go about doing it is to just talk to the company...many will jump at the idea - chances are if you enjoy it you may be a potential asset to them!  You don't have to be a student to do it - jsut motivated enough to go and find a place that will allow you to come in for a day (or more) to observe what happens on the job.  Just tell them that you're doing research for yourself!

I dont know about the "shadow" idea it takes you from what you should be doing and you might get in the way of person you are shadowing. I think you got many GOOD ideas the best being Ask your company about position and tell them your interest and talk to people (not just at your job site) who already work at this position ask them about job duties and what skills you need to do this job. One last thought look it up on internet you might find a wealth of information here

I guess it may depend on the field, but the best information I've ever gotten was from shadowing.  You really get a chance to see what the job is about, not just what people might tell you...they can't tell you everything, I know that there are things that I forget when explaining a position.

I certainly agree if shadowing can be done without getting in way of person you are shadowing and as long as it doesnt keep you from your own duities

hello! i'm sorry i haven't posting for awhile.

after thinking it through, i have decided to choose research. quite a risk as i'm also taking a pay cut and it's new to me. but what the heck! life is abt taking chance and i like this better than the other. anyway, no turning back now.

i have this bad problem: which is always wondering "what if" i have chosen otherwise. i'm trying hard to change my attitude as lessons shd be learnt from the past and work towrds the future. therefore, i have look to the future and has been reading up on my basic foundation as a recap.

thank you all of you here! eastendergirl, azure, red, rhune, david! thanks for all the help! feels so good to have friends that care! Tongue
