Memory Triggers
« on: Jul 21st, 2003, 11:48pm »

I found a lump in my mashed potatoes at dinner this evening and immediately thought of my deceased maternal grandfather.  I can't push a cart in the grocery store without thinking of my dear high school friend who was killed in a traffic accident when she was 16.  If I find a rubber band on the floor, I think of my maternal grandmother.  Silly things to associate with departed loved ones, but they trigger memories every time.

My grandfather always wanted lumps in his mashed potatoes so my grandmother made sure there were lumps just for him.  I couldn't stand the lumps and I'm proud to say I can make the creamiest lump-free mashed potates you ever tasted.  I'm not sure how that lump slipped by me tonight.

My girl friend mentioned to me more than once that she couldn't wait to get married and have kids so she could put them in the cart and push them around the grocery store.  She never got to do that, but I've yet to go to the grocery store and push that cart around without thinking of her.

Finally, as my grandmother aged, her eyesight began to fail.  When her newspaper was delivered it always had a rubber band around it.  It would inevitably get away from her and go flying across the room.  She could never find them and when we would go to visit we would find rubber bands all over the floor in the living room.  When I happen to find a rubber band on the floor thoughts of Grandma immediately come to mind.

Does anyone else have "triggers"?  It seems to be really strange things that do it, at least in my case.

smells trigger alot of thoughts for me

a flower, a perfume, etc etc

my aunt and uncle/godparents were killed in a car accident last year, prior to their death whenever I would walk in their apartment, it would smell "old"  like medicine and must.  To this day  I find myself noticing that smell alot of places and loving it, didn't care for it so much then, but I love it now!!  Tongue

I remember reading once that the sense of smell is the strongest "memory sense" and I notice in general it's smells that will trigger a memory for me.

the smell of good marijuana = the kootenays (nelson and area)
the smell of honeysuckle = my grandmother's house in nelson
pansies = my grandmother
reese's peanut butter cups = my sister
non alcoholic beer = same grandmother
peanut butter, banana and honey sandwiches = my uncle albert

i will be thinking about this more as the day goes on and more triggers happen... Smiley

Smells are strong triggers for me too, but music seems to be my strongest trigger. From my earliest memories there was always music. Even when the whole clan would gather at the lake the radio was always on, or someone would bring records to play. (For those who are too young to remember, "records" were CD's before there were CD's. Wink )

The old song "Sentimental Journey" always makes me think of my aunt, who died when I was a teenager. She loved that song.

I really like this thread...there are so many things that bring back memories for me. I think music is one of the biggest for me also. However, whenever I run into a problem that would have required Dad's wonderful ability to "jury rig something" and I figure out a way to do it myself..I ask Dad if he is proud of me. There are way too many items to list but just thinkng about this brought back a lot of good memories..thanks!

I hadn't thought about smells until azure mentioned them.  I always think of my brother when I smell a skunk.....................don't take that the wrong way, he is a great guy.  It's because of an incident when we were kids and it is a long story.  Also, the smell of roses always brings back memories of my first high school dance.

Music doesn't do it for me.  I love music, but I really can't think of any specific song that triggers a special memory.  Maybe it's because I've experienced music overload in my life.  My daughters are both talented musicians and after hearing years of practice in the house, I just kinda' tune it out.

The song Time After Time reminds me of my ex-fiance. I don't know why... but something about the words just really touches me and reminds me of the fun times we experienced together.

Olives remind me of my mother. When I was little, she would always put them on her fingers and my dad would eat them off.

Any kind of apple juice reminds me of my brother, Luke. He LOVED it when he was a kid. seriously... that's all he would drink, no Pepsi or Coke for him, just apple juice.

That's all I can think of for the time being!

ok, this did not necessarily trigger a specific memory
but on my ride this afternoon, we stopped at a country store, they sold bottle caps, and JAX.  man did the childhood memories come back, especially the ones of my father stepping on the JAX, yikes!  Needless to say, I bought the bottle caps!

ok, maybe spelled "jacks"

there were ten starrish shaped pieces and a rubber ball, you had to bounce the ball then before catching it, pick up the pieces in groups of,1, 2 , 3 etc etc  hard to explain I guess,  I remember loving to play them

I remember those too! I loved em. I also remember a pick up sticks game, does anyone remember what that was called? You dropped the sticks and had to pick them up in order trying not to disturb the others.
