I just noticed the Amber Alert ticker and this time it is too close to home. The girls were abducted from my hometown. Rhune you have done a good thing here by displaying the ticker. I never thought I would be reading about a local abduction. I will be keeping my eyes on people and Jeeps when I go out later, although they are probably long gone by now.

July 27, 2003

An Amber Alert has been issued for Brooke Michelle Reese, 12, and Kaitlyn Marie Reese, 11, whom police said were abducted from a Kokomo apartment early this morning.

Police believe the girls were taken by their stepfather, Kenneth Floyd Housley, who is driving a tan and green 1997 Jeep Wrangler and may be headed to Tennessee.

The vehicle may have expired Indiana license plate 34L5831, or it may have a Hoosier Veteran specialty plate VT4452.

Brooke Michelle, 12, is white, 5-feet-2-inches tall, 135 pounds, and has short blonde hair and hazel eyes. Brooke was wearing white pajamas shorts and a tank top, with red cherries and red trim. There's a red bow on the neckline.

Kaitlyn Marie, 11, is white, 4-feet tall, 85 pounds, with long brown hair styled in a pony tail and hazel eyes. Kaitlyn was wearing white tennis shoes with a blue Nike logo.

Police said the girls were abducted about 3 a.m. from 1809 W. Carter, Apartment D35 in Kokomo, about 60 miles north of Indianapolis.

Also missing from the residence is duct tape, a hunting knife, pillowcases, food, cash, an atlas and a fishing tackle box.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kokomo Police Department at 1-888-582-6237.

Kokomo girls found O-K after Amber Alert

Kokom, July 27 - Police say two Kokomo girls, who were apparently abducted early Sunday morning, have been found O-K in Tennessee.

The girls were found with their father about 12 hours after their early morning abduction.

The three were found in northeastern Tennessee after an off-duty police dispatcher noticed a Jeep Wrangler fitting the description of the vehicle the father was believed to be driving.

Officials say the father, Kenneth Floyd Housley was then arrested for resisting police during a traffic stop.

A statewide Amber Alert had been issued for the girls.

Authorities had said 12-year-old Brooke Michelle Reese and 11-year-old Kaitlyn Marie Reese were believed to be in extreme danger.

Authorities say Housley is believed to be the biological father of the younger girl and a stepfather to the older girl.

Wow. How did they find them? I think the organization is great. Did they send people out or did they ask police to help them?

Well, I can tell almost exactly why the stuff had been taken - I just need a little more evidence about the case for me to tell. I still have no idea what the fishing tackle box was for, unless someone has more details. I can figure out all the rest!

Basically the way amber alerts work is just massively spreading the word so that there are eyes and ears looking for them everywhere. If you spot them, you're of course supposed to alert the police and not go after them yourself. It's had great success so far becuase of the way they are just getting the information out to the public right away. In the past when a child has gone missing they required the child be gone for at least 24 hours before they would act and decide the child was really gone and by that time, in the bad cases, the child would often be dead. After the amber alerts were put in place, everything changed and most of these children come home alive and right away from what I have seen.
