I just got off the phone with Dar and am happy to report her mom made it through surgery with no complicities. She said that, in fact, Gloria was looking great (in comparison). Who said miracles don't happen.

The surgery was to install a colostomy and took a mere 1 1/2 hours.

As for the rest of the story, I think Dar will stay put for the night and perhaps return to work the next day or Wednesday....and then she can update.

Thanks so much Wings for posting this for me. It was fun talking to you though I wish it had been during a happier time.

I did not stay put for two reasons...first ..there was no way I was going to get any sleep at the hospital cause the nurses were in the room every few minutes to check on her and will be the rest of the nite. Secondly, we finally had a doctor come in and talk to us.

Miracles do happen and prayer is incredible. We are so blessed and know it tonite. We bought mom some time. They did the colostomy and no one thing went wrong. We were expecting at least a 3 hour surgery and personally after her urinistomy, I expected it to be a min of 6 hours. She never got taken from the room until 11am and Helen and I went with her the prep room and they never came to get her from there till noon. The operation never started till 1:17. There is a big flat screen computer screen in the surgery waiting room (thought of you Addams when I saw it and the talk on this board) that tells you where each patient is .Apparently, they just push buttons while in the OR and it updates the computer. At 2:20, hers read Operation Stopped. We sat wondering what had gone wrong. There was a lot of talking about the past going on as we all sat nervously wondering why the operation didn't take even 2 hours. No doctor came to talk to us which is very odd. Finally a cardiac member came out to ask permission to shock her heart for an irregular heartbeat that they had found when she first came to Hanover and we already knew about it. I signed the paperwork for the procedure, and 10 minutes later, the shock worked and she was back to a normal beat.
They came to us around 5 to allow 2 of us into the Recovery room. I was going no matter what but I refused to make the decision on the second person and in the end, my uncle backed down and let my SIL go in. We didn't stay long anyway cause mom looked fantastic considering all she has gone through and I saw Linda, the OB/GYN that had been handling her case and asked her to come out and talk to all of us. She did and we finally got some answers. Mom stayed stable during the entire operation. All the blood that was ordered was not needed..they hardly touched it. Her heart not only did great but also they were happy to discover that the valves are fine..they had thought they would be in rough shape. Linda had not been an attending during surgery so she promised to send someone up who was later.

Just as we were leaving at 8pm tonite, that doctor showed up. We had wanted to talk to her cause we had asked Linda about the tumor and she couldn't answer. This doctor could and did. With every miracle, a price must be paid. Mom's ovarian cancer masticized to her liver a year ago April, now it is masticizing elsewhere. This new tumor has been around for a bit cause it is quite large. It is on her bladder and is effecting her kidneys. They feel that it is also why her legs are so swollen and making it hard for her to walk. They do not feel that it will stop her from enjoying life right now and hope to send her home in a couple of days if nothing comes up post operative...My SIL asked if the Florida trip was a possibility and the doctor said that there would be no reason she can't fly..she would just be tired...so they will assess her tomorrow and let me know what they think. I had already canceled this trip in my head so I was shocked when Helen asked. I called my uncle on the way home since he did not stay for this doctor and the tumor news and I told him about Florida and he definitely thought it would help her spirits if the trip was a go.....so we are back to praying that she will be strong enough to make this trip...

Thanks to everyone for all the prayers...We have had them answered more times that I can count right now...Mom is truly a blessed person and I am truly blessed to be her daughter.....

Thanks also to Wings for being my messenger on the boards...someday we will have to chat for fun...

I will not take Mom to Florida unless I get a doctor's okay to do so. However, I really hope she will be up to it as I think we have gotten more than our share of miracles in the past 2 years. We have been very blessed in that regard and I really want to cherish what time I have left with her. I told my SIL about doing the tape with my mom and my aunt and she was really excited to have such a thing. I think that we are losing the war this time and not just a battle and I'm not sure how much more she can take. Cancer is dreadful and my heart goes out to anyone who ever has to deal with a loved one with it.

Thanks again everyone for your kind words. Mom sounded very out of it this morning still but very determined to go home soon. We are not telling her that we are trying to do Florida as she was already disappointed enough and I need the doctor's assessment first. She is one hell of a woman!
