DEPRESSION

This is an issue I've recently brought myself to face "down" and seek help for (thanks to a "little" help from my friends).  Depression hasn't always been thought of as a disease, but rather, something that one should "snap out of".

CBS Sunday Morning presented the following this morning.  It's rather a long read but I hope some of you will take a gander.

well  I am proud to announce I take medication for depression

started a little over a year ago after the tragic death of my favorite aunt and uncle (also my godparents) in an auto accident, I had needed help with depression before this, but felt this episode perhpas justified it, now I know I never needed a "justifiable" reason to be depressed, it is just a part of my being.

So if there is anyone out there struggling with this, and for me the struggle was more with accepting I had it, then the actual depression itself, then go for it, see your doctor!

You're so right azure.  In this day and age, it make no sense to suffer when there are great meds out there.

I had my follow-up appt this afternoon.  He "upped" the dosage on my meds again and told me to take them at night now instead of in the morning.  While my bod readjusts - I might not be too active on the boards.  Wink

I had a couple of questions about Paxil too.  I've been told by several people that when they've quit taking it (or other anti-depressants),  they went through hell.  There are warnings on TV ads, from your doc, your pharmacist and the info sheets that come with your meds - NOT TO QUIT without speaking first to your physician.  What I wanted to know was - what properties or narcotics are in Paxil (in particular) that make them so addictive.

He told me  they're not addictive.  What happens is - whatever one's body needs to make them NOT depressed, is put in place by taking the AD's.  When said body is deprived again by these additives - it goes into some kind of shock.

We conversed specifically about Paxil so I don't know about the other AD's.  He did tell me though, that if I'm not more improved in one month, he'll change the med.  I like this doctor - he's a fighter like me.   Wink

i affirm all of you who struggle with depression and are on medication.  having been misdiagnosed and on four different anti-depressants over the last three years, i am thankful for my proper diagnosis.  being on medication that does not work for your problem can be hellish.  if only they could just put a diagnosis helmut on us to glean what is really going on but unfortunately the answer is to try one medication then another and another.  i gained over thirty pounds on those pills.  while i have lose two thirds of that, i still struggle with the weight loss.
i now only have a few bad days a month around my period when my estrogen levels are increasing.  at first, that feeling scared the crap out of me.  that depression again feeling and so i will hold all of you in my prayers.

depression sucks!

I love you K-A!   Tongue  It's a blessing that you're in such a better condition than a couple of years ago.  That was horrible.

Although I agree med help many but they DONT solve the problem they only mask it! Meds are wonderful but much like cough medicine it only minimizes syptoms it does NOT cure! Meds should and need be taken with proper counseling and/or pyscharactic help (sorry about spelling) I have known many with depression and have seen many helped but i haver also seen many use meds as a crutch which doesnt really help them in the long run and there is always that fear that you could be misdiagnosed along with this fact. Many Doctors prescribe antidpressant wait to see  effect then either increase/decrease dosage or change to another antidpressant!

David:  Although I agree med help many but they DONT solve the problem they only mask it!

To date - there is no known "cure" for depression.  The causes of this disease are vast - ranging from genetic, hormonal imbalance, chemical imbalance to trauma (physical/emotional), etc.

David:  Meds are wonderful but much like cough medicine it only minimizes syptoms it does NOT cure!

To date - there is no known "cure" for the common cold either.  There are meds to minimize the misery - fever, coughing, achiness, runny nose, etc.   I would rather take meds for this to minimize the symptoms while the cold runs its' course.  I certainly wouldn't refer to cold meds as a "crutch" or compare anti-depressents to cough syrup.

That being said, most everyone has had a cold or flu - and we can sympathize when another person has a cold or flu.  Most of us know to drink plenty of liquids and have bed rest, take pain relievers, etc.  We know (or should know) to watch for other symptoms when home remedies don't work - that could result in bronchitis, pneumonia, etc.

Unfortunately, depression doesn't present as a cold - or isn't visible, like a case of chickenpox.  The symptoms can build over a period of years and years, can come and go.  The causes (as I mentioned) are vast, as well.  Further, there are no over the counter (OTC) medicines available.

I ignored my symptoms - or dealt with them, whatever.  Finally, when I decided I couldn't handle not being able to sleep, could barely get more than 6 or 7 bites of food to "stay down" and was losing too much weight, couldn't think or make decisions, couldn't shut my brain down, couldn't sit or relax, prayed to the Lord that I wouldn't wake the next day, on and on - that's when I took myself to the doctor.  (I presented with many other symptoms that are too graphic/personal/gross, to post.)

That was one of the hardest moments of my life, sitting in that waiting room, wondering what the hell I was going to tell the doc.  I said many prayers - "Lord, please help me, help the doctor to help me be whole again!"  My daughter was with me and I told her maybe we should leave and get outta there.  I can't describe the look she gave me - 'nuff said.   Wink

I've had several illnesses in my life.  Who hasn't?  I've had several surgeries in my life.   Many have.  However, I can't/wouldn't compare myself or life experiences to someone like Dars - whose mom has liver cancer and other serious health concerns.  Or Irishlass, who is fighting the good fight to help save her father.

Lastly, I would suggest to anyone, that unless one has walked in the shoes of another, it would be best not to offer anything but emotional support and encouragement for wellness of another.

Comment was NOT meant to argue however I was NOT surprised. Many of the post looked like a ad for MEDS I agree meds can and often are very helpful to many and will remain so. My point was one of caution NOTHING MORE. far as walking in my shoes I have walked in and with those shoes more often than many!!!!!!! My comments come from experience not opinon!!

It worked!  Switching my course of meds to be taken at night gave me 9 wonderful hours of uninterrupted sleep last night.  I feel so much better this morning.   Tongue
