Haven't seen a poll about this on here so I thought it'd be interesting to find out.  If you browse from home and at work and have different connections, check them both.  If you're not sure what connection you use at work check the "Not sure (at work)" box. Smiley

I have DSL at home and I love it
at work I am not sure what we use, we have 4 branch offices all networked into one if that helps, I never dial up, but it is certainly not as fast as my DSL

PS.  what is a T1?

A T-1 is a super fast (but expensive) connection that you'll find in most larger businesses.

This is what mine says:

Type: LAN Connection

Status:  Enabled

SiS 900 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapter

Is that what you meant?

all that means is that you're tied into a network of computers.  If it's at work then you're probably on cable, dsl, or T1.  Regardless, just select "not sure (at work)" and that'll do.

If you want to test your connection, go to http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2.  Pretty much anything over 500kbps is good enough for normal use.  Mine is around 1600kbps on cable modem.

Most small businesses that I've worked or consulted for use DSL or a fractional T-1.  A T-1 is basically 24 telephone lines together.  If you have the entire T-1 for data and the lines set up for 64K, you get about 1.544Mbps of throughput.  A fractional T-1 uses some of the lines for voice and some for data.  A typical arrangement would be 8 Voice lines and 16 data (About 1.03Mbps).  I have only come across 2 commercial cable modems in fours years of independent consulting.

I have DSL for business run to my house.  It's a business class product with 4 IP's and no limits on what I can do with it.  It is a Covad 768/384K ADSL connection run on it's own POTS line.

Speed tests can be deceiving as well.  I got the following just a minute ago:

The upload shows a speed faster than my line can do.  If you have any caching proxy servers between you and the speedtest site, it can throw off the results.  I go to this site http://home.cfl.rr.com/eaa/Bandwidth.htm, and try multiple tests.
