Remembering September 11, 2001

As I think of what happened two years ago I feel so sad. I Remember the stress, the anxiety, the anger, the worry and the sadness.  They never go away.

Last year there was a wonderful memorial service at City Hall. This year I can't even find one service anywhere in the city.  I am disappointed.

I will ask my staff to find time in their morning for a minute of silence and reflection.  Since Thursday's are staff meetings I guess we will reflect on the day for each of us.

A law firm I worked with had offices in one of the tower.  My insurance company I use for my business practice insurance had their offices in one tower as well.   I wrote a small article for our industry newsletter last year reminding all members of the loss that our insurance company suffered including one Canadian from the Toronto office who was visiting.

I also remember pulling together in friendship and solidarity.  That is more important than all the rest.  I pray that I can be given the guidance to carry the kindnesses that were shown then forward in my heart to share with others  I meet in my life.

Here are some links to help us remember

http://www.september11news.com/ (this link was selected by the US Library of Congress for its historic content)

here is a collection of poems http://www.mi-card.com/9-11dbcc/valghentword.pdf

the slide show at this website says it all, we can remember http://www.heartlight.org/prayerforthenation/cantcryhardenough.html and this is what the creator of that slide show has to say:

Dear Friends,

I hope everyone is holding up in these disturbing, confusing times. September 11th's events still weigh heavy on my heart, though not nearly as heavy as one's directly affected by these tragic acts. I am alive. My family is alive. My friends are alive. Alive to witness the aftermath of terrorist attacks. After browsing the news articles, along with all the unbelievable photos, I had been brought to tears a number of times. I felt compelled to do something. So, I did what artists do with their emotions and energy: create. I spent 3 days in front of my computer screen putting together a tribute to the victims of September 11. My intention is that this tribute might express a feeling that so many of us are coping with right now, be a release for sorrow, and most importantly, offer hope in this time of need.

When I was alone in my apartment working on this tribute, I had no idea how far it would reach, and how many lives it would touch. The initial mailing of the link was sent only to 25 people. Since then, over 1,000,000 people have viewed it! It is true that we are not alone in this world. It is true that one person can make a difference; for evil or good.

When the crying is over, action will be needed. I pray our actions would make a difference for good.

On that day 38 planes carrying 6500 people landed in a Newfoundland city called Gander _ population 9600.  The population nearly doubled without a moment's notice.

In all 15 Canadian airports accepted 44,000 diverted air passengers on that day and for the days that followed.

Kansas City was also a destination that accepted diverted planes in the US, and I know we had people living in the airport for several days afterward.  I'm not sure of how many total, but I seem to recal it was a large number.

None of us will ever forget where we were or what we were doing on that day, 9-11, just as our parents and grandparents before us remember the events of December 7, 1941, the day Pearl Harbor was bombed.  We still feel the lump in our throats and the empty pit in our stomachs of the horror of this day.

Our church service on Sunday was devoted to remembering
9-11.  The service was wonderful and very appropriate.

Even as we remember the horrific events of 9-11-01, we must never forget how our Country was violated that day.  We must strengthen our resolve and realize that if we do not keep pressing in our fight on terrorism, we will one day be fighting these radical terrorists NOT in the far reaches of Iraq but rather in the streets of Chicago and many other cities in the U.S.

I have said it before and will say it again.  I would rather spend the money, whatever the cost, to FINISH the job over there rather than learn one day that some asshole has detonated some dirty bomb in one of our major cities, rendering it uninhabitable for the next 50 years!

As we tuck ourselves in bed tonight - I know that I, for one, will remember how it was to wake up that next horrible morning (two years ago) to such chaotic devastation and sorrow.

My prayers and hopes for closure remain with those who lost their family and friends that day and the months that followed.  My prayer is that this war will end.

I remember spending that day of 9/11 with you MzWings and others of that era.  I remember it as clear as if it was yesterday.

i will never be able to remember September 11, 2001 without thinking of Mr. Wizard's post and of course remembering my special american visitor staying at our home.  all of which has given tomorrow special meaning.

Finally I cannot forgot crying each time I walked from my office to my car having to pass the front of the consulate where candles surely must be burning tonight and the flowers, the notes, the teddy bears, the wreaths.  It is a walk of about 20 or 30 metres/yards and no matter my resolve at the beginning, I was in tears at the end.

I pray for peace.

My God addams!  It was a time in our lives of which we will never forget.  We were so frightened for Mr.W's twin bro and the list grew.  And so our friendships grew and were further cemented on 9/11/01.  Personally, I couldn't have made it through those following hours, weeks and months, had it not been for the friends such as you.

to have the whole world to chat with in the chat room and support one another.  as someone said earlier to me today, it's hard to imagine a time when the internet was not there to support people in these difficult times.

Although I live 3000 miles away I felt pain and anger that day. I recall driving to work and hearing first report then the second and the terriable reality of what had happened. As a parent my first thought went to all the parents who must have lost thier children. i wanted to turn car around and drive home to hug my kids. I called Pilar (not yet my wife at time) and told her I loved her and to make sure she hugged the kids the second they got home from school. I treated each person I met that day as if I would never see then again. I prayed to God I had done good in his eyes and thanked him for gifts he had given me. the teribble truth was we werent safe in our own backyard any longer. I was alot of things that day but more than anything else that i was an AMERICAN! and what ever it took I would defend myself, my family and my friends whenever faced with terror from whatever source! I will never forget that day what I thought felt said  etc etc Alot has happened since then and alot more will happen but you can count on one thing I will always be A PROUD AMERICAN!

We were scheduled to go on a trip the next day and had second thoughts about even traveling by car.  Since we had friends and a son waiting for us to get to our destination, we went on.  Every place we stopped was so quiet and reverent.  No one was talking and the sky, oh so quiet and empty.
We're in Branson, Mo., a tourist town and hardly anyone was outside each day for everyone was glued to the tv's in their rooms, condos, etc.    That friday with the service in D.C. televised, my firend and I did not even sit in the room together, she in their living room and me in ours.  We grieved for our country privately.
Never has our son been so proud to see us.  Talk about hugs!  These young folks have never witnessed anything as this, as we were babies during WW2 ourselves.  Seeing us seemed to give them a comfort feeling.
Bumper, you are so right but fighting a war on terrorism and over there.  Hopefully this can end, but we don't expect it to be soon.
As many of you have read this from me before,  seeing the American Flag after we've been out of the country is the most beautiful  sight we've ever seen anywhere.  I'm proud to be a 5th generation American and know that my grandchildren are Americans as well.  Hopefully we will leave a safer country for generations to come.
One thing that makes me know what an honor and priviledge it is to be an American is to talk with folks who've just received their American Citizenship.  I work 2 days a week and the 2 young men who work there as well are so proud to be in America.  They are from the Phillipines, one has his citizenship and the other is just waiting for another 1 1/2 yrs to pass so he can become an American as well.
We can only hope and pray!
