How our garbage is collected

In the City of Toronto we are undergoing a transformation in our garbage collection.

At present my garbage pick up is as follows:

Blue Box (glass, plastic recycling)  - once every two weeks

Grey Box (paper and paper products recycling) - once every two weeks

Garbage (what doesn't go into the Blue or Grey boxes)- once every week.

On January 1, 2004 my neighbourhood is moving into a new system being systematically introduced throughout the city at various times.  We will receive our GREEN BOX.

WATCH SLIDE SHOW HERE:  http://www.toronto.ca/greenbin/slideshow/slideshow_intro.htm

Green box:  picked up every week

Garbage:  now moving to every second week!

Today I watched a little online slide presentation about the green box system.  I was  Shocked  and :yikes: when I saw everything that goes into this bin.  It's more than a box.  It's a bin with a closeable lid and you have a mini version that you collect stuff inside the house.

Incredibly all disposable diapers will no longer go into city dumps.  They will go into Green box recycling.  ALL food waste will go in.  And (don't blush ladies and gents) also all feminine hygiene products.   I have no idea how this is going to work in practice or how much it costs but all of this material gets diverted from the dumps which are overflowing (and Toronto is sending its extra to Michigan - and this does not exactly make us friends with lots of the Michiganders around - but Michigan gains economically and agreed to it until I see some politicians campaigning to stop taking everyone's garbage).

Well just wanted to let you know that the sorting is going to be getting more complicated and now I worry greatly about animals and rodents with all these food stuffs around.  I spilled or tipped over green bin will not be a pretty site.

Mostly the SMELL! :holding nose emoticon:  I just can't imagine.  We are told to wash the bin regularly to keep the odours down.  Oh my.

edited to add:  you can put in all animal cage bedding that has been "used" and also kitty litter.

edited also to say:  You should see the calendar we get setting out each and every week just which bins and boxes go out where and when.

it sounds a lot like the system they have in Japan addams...we had a chart with 8 different categories and the days/weeks when they went out...there were seperate communal dumpsters for burnable and non-burnable garbage, as well as for bottles, cans, milk cartons, styrofoam packaging (and eacho f those are seperate)...fortunately burnable garbage went out twice a week...but thing is if you sorted your garbage wrong it could very well end up on your front step deposited by some garbage "godfather" for you to re-sort.

interesting that they would return the garbage to you for re-sorting.   some cities in Ontario also do that.  toronto does not.  I wish they would.

We are very careful with how we sort.  We keep the poster with all the instructions posted for when we need to read the rules and regulations (after all we are lawyers :laffSmiley

I see so many people with their stuff all mixed together and un-permitted items that I wonder if all of it is even useable.  I would be interested to know more about where this recycling goes and how it is sorted etc.

disposable diapers form a huge part of landfill sites (up to 5 % I believe) and they also can be a source of contamination.  I can't believe that we are going to be able to have roadside recycling of all disposable diapers now.  Before I had to hire a recycling service for my diapers or take them to a special station way across town.

I'm not sure about other states. But in New Hampshire and in Vermont, recycling is done on an individual basis per town. Some collect your recycling at the curb but most have decided that is too expensive and have put in places that you must visit. For someone like my mom, that is impossible. So she does not recycle and it is not something you have to do. She does however now have to purchanse orange tags that say her town name on them (1.50 each) and put them onto each bag of trash she has. So we tend to grab the trash a lot on our way out over the weekend and dispose of it in our towns.

In NH, some recycling is done in the bigger towns with curbside pickup. I was in one of those towns once and like Addams, I sorted very patiently everything as it was supposed to be. It was a pain and again recycling is not a requirement, just a request. Then I moved to smaller towns and you had to go to a designated spot. Again, I work 2 jobs and most of the time, these spots are open in the afternoon during the week which makes it impossible for someone like me.

Thankfully a year ago, a town next door decided to install a huge dumpster like thing outside the local fire station. They have it set up so you can put paper type stuff in one half and other stuff in the other half. You would be shocked to know how much people can't even sort that much. I see newspapers in with tin cans all the time and it makes me boil. I am so afraid that they are gonna make it so that the people doing this are going to get tired of having to resort and decide to take it away. It has been great having something that is available 24 hours a day/7 days aweek and now mom keeps all her newspapers aside so I can at least recycle those.

in massachusetts, it is also separated by town, but most that i've encoutered still do curbside pick up.  here in somerville, we can recycle quite a bit, and i am constantly on the kids at work to recycle more too.  the cities do make it pretty convenient, but i still have friends who throw away everything, and it makes me so angry, becauseit is really not that difficult.   Angry
