ABC to Continue Ritter's Sitcom
Sep 16, 4:09 PM EST

Associated Press

ABC Television said Tuesday it will continue the sitcom that showcased the late John Ritter, showing his television family coping with the death of Ritter's character on "8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenage Daughter."

ABC executives said the show will premiere next Tuesday as planned and that the network will air the three episodes Ritter filmed before his death.

After that, the show will go into repeats while writers retool the sitcom and production starts. No date was given for when the show will return to the air.

Ritter died last Thursday of an undetected heart problem. He was 54.

"We are going to stick with it," Susan Lyne, president of ABC Entertainment, said in a conference call with reporters.

Each of the first three episodes already shot will start with a special introduction, featuring the cast members. The next new show will deal with the death of Ritter's character, Paul Hennessy.

"Future episodes will take viewers into the Hennessy household as they experience the loss of a father and construct a new life together," said Lloyd Braun, chairman of the ABC Entertainment Television Group. "We will play out the situation as real life."

Executives said they considered a number of options, including canceling the show, but decided to continue the series.

Well...I guess it's nice that many other people didn't have to lose their jobs and suffer additional hardship because of his untimely death...I'm sure he wouldn't have wanted that.  It almost makes me want to start watching it and hope it gets good enough ratings to stay on.

You know this could actually work out really well for Colby...if he's the recurring role as the handsome handyman, they could work it so that the daughter has a crush on him, but he falls for the widow.  That could certainly create some conflict...

The View and Access Hollywood have just reported that Henry Winkler and Tony Danza are being considered for the show.  ABC is  planning at this point to write in his death.  This makes sense for there ae teenagers in the world loosing a parent and dealing with it on this show could be a very helpful to them.

How about Winkler as the Grandad and Danza as the love interest, later on of course, on the love interest!  Either one will be a wonderful addition to this show.

By no means should Colby loose his chance for  stardom!

See, I don't think it's wrong at all.  John Ritter was an actor, and he would have wanted the show to go on.  He would not have wanted his death to cost everyone else their jobs and security as well.

Thanks Rhune, I see writing his death into the show as a public service message.  Having a great fun life also has it tradgedies.  What a helpful message this could be to those in need.

My stepchildren lost their Mother at ages 12 and 16.   I remember watching a movie with them about the Mother dying and it had positive results for them.
Hopefully this show will as well.

I politely disagree for reasons already stated this is a SITCOM not a drama. Writing characters death is dramas is one thing but to look for humor in thelost of a Father/Husband I find upsetting

I doubt it will be approached in a comedic light.

I hadn't watched this show - but I'd like to when it starts up again.

John Ritter was wonderful and I feel that truly, the producers of this show will treat his real life death in this series, with respect in every way.  No way do I think they would make it comedic.

So I vote agin ya David!  I believe that this show will show decorum and respect to John Ritter.  I've seen in the past that this type of situation can be handled correctly - I believe it will be here, in the name of John Ritter.

I'm sorry I wasnt suggesting they would make light of his death only that show is a sitcom and therfore meant to be funny. I really didnt watch although I did see first episode so I wont watch now. Since show was about Ritter's character i dont see how show can remain in tact as it was perhaps it will be better perhaps not I dont even know why I feel so upset over it i just do lol

Of course you do David.  You're a very passionate man - which I find great.  Not too many men (on the subject of this particular show) would/could give a hang about it, one way or another.

It hurts when I think of JR - geesh -  I remember when he was born.  Daddy loved Tex Ritter's music and would drive us crazy blaring it on the radio.  When it was announced TR's wife had given birth to a son, named John - Daddy was so excited.  I think Daddy would have loved to have a son.

Now John's gone - it just seems wrong 'cause he was so young and it happened so fast.  I can only barely imagine how his family is dealing with this.  They had no "closure", as it were.  As his fans, we have no closure as well.   Except that I def plan to watch his show now.  Maybe if we do that, it will give us closure and help us accept his sudden death.
