I Am A Liar!!!..NO LONGER!

Nearly all of us have lied - or stretched the truth - at one time or another.  Some people are very good at it - some aren't.  I've never been able to get away with it.  But I followed some very bad advice and yesterday it caught up with me - big time.

When I pulled up to the Canadian border and handed over my passport - (as per usual) I was asked how long I'd be staying in Canada....and why?  I told them about 3 to 5 weeks.  I was immediately handed back my passport with an additional yellow ticket and was told to go "inside" to speak with the Immigration Officer(s).   :yikes:

(Even though I'm on meds for depression and anxiety - my body reacts to stress by noticeably shaking from head to foot.)

I was grilled from one end to the other - and all the while the man typed like crazy on his computer.  Then he conferred with someone else who started the questioning all over again.  The problem?  When it was decided I should move to Canada, I was told to never divulge the fact that I'm actually living here in Canada while applying for Residency.   Yesterday, I was told that that used to be the case but was changed several years ago.   Undecided

The Man knew I had misrepresented myself, I knew he knew - and when he asked to see my driver's license, he saw my debit card (CIBC = a Canadian bank) and asked me why I had it.  I started to explain - and then stopped.  I hung my head and said "I'm a damned liar".

He said "Ma'am!  You are an incredibly intelligent woman and obviously a very caring woman - and I'll thank you not to damn yourself.  Further, you are without a doubt, one of the worst liars I've come across in all my years here.  You're also a grown woman who should have contacted immigrations professionals - and should NOT followed bad advice from your daughter's inlaws.  What you've done could cost you dearly - deportation - here and now."

(Yeppers - the inlaws - again.  :headache: )

I apologized - I didn't know what else to do.  He accepted my apology but he told me I was going to have to produce the truth and to remember, in this age of high technology, whatever I said from  this moment on, will be scrutinized and examined.  I promised I would and then he asked me what business I had attended to this day.

I told him I had been in Fargo to have the required physical for my Residency and he interrupted, and asked me if it was with Dr. **** ....and I just about fainted.   I answered yes and that it was in fact Dr. ***** ****.  He smiled at me and said - "now, don't you feel better??  May we shall continue with the WHOLE truth?"

So there I was - a 63 yo woman, with an OK. driver's license, a car purchased in Canada with a North Dakota license plate who said I lived in ND, a paid bill from Shaw Communications (internet/phone) sticking out of my purse and a debit card from a Canadian bank.....who had a lot of 'splaining to do.

Have any of you had that dream where you're a kid, in the classroom, totally naked?  That's exactly how I felt yesterday.  You try to run away, or sit down to hide yourself, but you're naked no matter what you do - or, as in my case - a flat out liar.

Then, on the other hand - I felt an indescribable sense/feeling of release.  I had been living with this nasty lie since I crossed the Canadian border May 24, 2002.  I had misrepresented myself to the Canadians authorities, of which the penalities are vast, and include imprisonment.  But all the wonderful immigration people yesterday, took pity on me - for lack of a better word.  "Pity" is exactly why I'm in my apt., typing this sordid mess on my precious pooter.

This is getting awfully long - sorry!  Now I must undo the misinformation on my papers and hope and pray the powers-that-be will allow my application for Canadian Residency to go forward.

i will most certainly be praying for their leniency.  you are such a dear person who, as you and they said, followed bad advice.

if you need some canadian references, please let all of us canadians know as i am sure we would be more than willing to send them.

i am also glad that the strain of the initial 'lie' is over.  oh wingsy, i find it hilarious that you crossed the border with your debit card within plain view in your wallet and you shaw tv bill hanging out!   Undecided  you are a bad liar.   Shocked  one that i am very proud to know and call my friend!

hugs, hugs and more hugs,

I'll be thinking of you Sharon and hope everything goes just right!  It sounds like the best thing to do was to come clean at this point, and make your very best effort to sort it all out.

What a scary experience.  I know how strong you are MzWings and I know that is why you were tough enough to admit the truth.  If you need an excellent immigration lawyer at any time I can refer you to one in the blink of an eye.

You did the right thing.  You must feel exhausted.

Take a big hug from addams  and pamper yourself all day.  You are a good person.

I truly am exhausted - through and through.  Before I posted of yesterday's event, I read and re-read it - wondering if I should be exposing what I had done, on the internet.  It took me quite awhile to hit that "submit" button.   I figured, in the end, if my story would/could prevent someone else from making the same mistake, it might be worth it.

At the moment I realized what a huge hole I had dug for myself and told the man I was a liar - I had no idea - at all - what a serious offense I had committed.  Not only that - I began to realize my daughter had put herself in serious jeopardy too, being as how she's my sponsor.  In fact, I was told that her Canadian Residency could be recalled - if Immigration wanted to.  OMG!

And, at that "moment", I asked the officer how or why would he be able to believe anything I said further.  He made a slight giggle and said that's his job and training to know the difference.   And then he said, "shall we begin?  Please state your full name."  From that point on, after nearly every question, he said "absolutely correct."

You'll all have to realize too, that all during this interrogation, various other officers were milling around me - some with weapons, some not.  I've never been arrested, but I think I have a tinge of a feeling what that might be like.  I was scared shitless - which in and of itself - was a good thing.  (Trying for a little humour here peeps.)

Oh, and on the subject of all that stuff sticking out of my purse - I kept having to go dig for this and that.  That "stuff" - is one of the things that tipped that particular officer off that I was lying.  He said a "good" liar would never have had that type of incriminating evidence on their person in the first place.

And yes addams, my love.  You might just send me an atty's name - ya just never know - I might need it.  And any other advice you can think of.  Deb and I are going to the Immigration Dept. tomorrow to try undo this mess.

Oh My Gawd!  Can't I go out of town for 3 days without you getting into the biggest mess of all time? :laff: :laff: :laff:
Since I've seen your picture, I can just picture this whole situation.  I take it you also watched
"I Love Lucy" in the 50's, for this sure sounds like one of her stunts.

All teasing aside, I can just imagine how frightened you were and hopefully it all will work out just fine for you.
Good Luck!

No.  Had you been here - none - and I mean NONE of this  :deal: crap would have happened!

And speaking of "crap" - I may go to Shoppers Drug Mart tomorrow and purchase some Depends before we go to Immigration.  :laff:

The diff between Lucy and me though - she would have been wailing and running all over the place.  Me - I just stood there shaking like a leaf - no tears.  I'm sure if I weren't on my meds - I wouldn't be sitting here today.  Ewwww - I don't even want to think how my behaviour would have been.

Wings, I'm so sorry for sitting here laughing my head off!  Thank you so much.
After the horrible visit or should I say non-visit we had in Branson, I needed a good laugh.  And NO, we did not see the baby!  I'll post more on this later.

Sam's has disposable underpants 60 count for 22.94.  Do you think a big cake with a file in it will fit through the bars??
On the serious side, you'll be fine.  Dont' you know this  gave the Immigration Dept a much needed  good laugh and  I'll bettcha they don't get many things to chuckle over!
