Zener diodes
« on: Oct 10th, 2003, 11:05am »

Next Wednesday is my 15th Wedding Anniversary.

I met my wife at a Night Club in Boston in 1985.  I could tell she was a college student, so I asked what her major was.  She answered, "Computer Engineering".  I was thinking, 'Bullshit, she's just trying to impress me'.  So I asked her what courses she was taking.  When she told me semiconductors, I knew I could find out for sure.  So I asked her how a zener diode works.  She leaned over to her friend and said something like, "You won't believe what this jerk just asked me.".

Fast forward to October 2003.  We don't usually exchange gifts for our anniversaries.  We typically get something we need around the house, but we're both in on it.  I asked her if she was getting me anything and she said, "No.".  I knew she was lying in less than a second.  Off to find the perfect gift.  After some research I learned the 15th traditionally is crystal which neither of us like and modern 15th gift is a watch.

My sweetheart has been doing alot of walking lately so my first gift was a Timex Sports watch to track laps.  I also bought a very nice Swiss Wittnauer for those fancier occasions.

The last thing I did was to buy a cheap $9 silver ring from a little shop in the mall. I then went to Radio Shack and bought some zener diodes.  I soldered 3 zener diodes on to this ring (1 diode for 5 years).  It is the ugliest creation ever to be called jewelry.

She just had our 7 year old daughter tell me to pack a bag for tonight and to bring clothes for tomorrow.  So her surprise is starting today and I'm glad I bought my gifts early this time.

I'll let you know what her surprise is when I get back (Sunday I am guessing).

Here's my question: Is the Zener Diode ring geeky, romantic or just tacky.

Oh, I almost forgot.  She answered that 1985 question correctly and she was a CE major.

I think it sounds horribly romantic, just expect that she probably won't WEAR it, but will still LOVE it.

If the diode ring were the only gift, then it would be slightly tacky....sweet, but a miss.   As a reminder of your meeting, I think it's incredibly romantic.   BTW, I'm glad you found a good alternative to the crystal.  Crystal isn't everyone's cuppa tea, but you can even cover that by giving her a little crystal suncatcher.....and she can put it a window near her at home or work as a reminder.     Happy Anniversary to you and your wife, Reset.

I suspect Reset put 3 zener diodes on the ring because he is expecting a higher voltage anniversary......

Aw, you know the three stone ring is in right now, as in yesterday, today and tomorrow.
I think for our 20th nexy June 30th,  I'll just give my hubby 3 pairs of clean white underwear!  This kind of gift should bring out some higher voltage!   Tongue  Grin
