Let's Speak English here!

Ok, this is my hangup, I guess you might call it.  I get my nails done about twice a month. The shop where I go is a franchise all of the nail techs are Vietnamese.  These are lovely, polite, efficient ladies, but..........it drives me totally nuts when they start speaking to each other in their native language.  One day one of them did not have much to do and the whole time I was having my nails done she stood by my shoulder and talked with my nail tech.  I was about to scream, get up and walk out.  Then I politely told my lady this is rude.   I come here to relax and all this talking in your native tongue  is very nerve racking.  She apologized and the other one went on her way!  I asked when that tech's day off is and told her I would get my nails done on that one's day off the next time.  This has been happening  all summer.

My point is this - they are in America, making American money and certainly do not wish to return to their homeland, so I am offended when they speak their language and not in English.  Also it is just plain rude!  We do not know if they are talking about us or not, but most of the ladies in the salon are equally as uncomfortable and irritated as I!

This is the most annoying foreign language I've ever heard and is horrible to the ears!  French, Spanish, all Ok, but this one is a whine, whangy high pitch that drives ones nerves to the nth degree.

Now for any of you who may get offended, DON'T, for you are not doing a service for me and I'm not paying you with my American money.  I've just been wondering if any of you experience this and feel as we here in the deep ole southwest, or are we the ones who are off!

One day I told them in a fun way that if they did not stop it, I was going to make a trip to Vietnam, get some of their money and come back and pay them with it.  They laughed and said, "NO, NO"!

They love it in America and most of them have citizenship here as well.

I guess I'm the opposite.  I love the melting pot we live in, and enjoy hearing other languages spoken.  I do agree it is rude to have a customer and then ignore them the whole time and speak in another language to someone else, but I think that would be rude no matter what language they were speaking.  In general I like the sounds of other languages and how they influence the "English" language, even sign language has had an impact on american slang.

Although I agree and find both rude and annoying to hear people talk in forein tongues. I reframe from saying as much at risk of being cvalled a "Racist" In most cases yes they could speak English but I also know that in other cases they have a better command of their own Language so will convrsing they use it with no intention to insult any of us. I will admit that in other Countries this would be dealt with harshly but this is America (The Melting Pot) I dont feel anyone speaking in a language other than English is tentionally be rude but yes Luci I agree it is annoying and I do wish they would talk English after all they live and work in a English speaking Country. I will add this my wife, as most of you know, is an American born mexican both her parents came here not knowing the language they made the effort to learn and made sure that their children (all 7) knew English in fact other than very rare occasions English is spoken in their home or even if on phone. They believed that English was the language of their NRW country and so that is what should be spoken.

Rhune and David both have good points on this subject.  Yes, we do live in a melting pot and I LOVE to know about other countries and cultures. But, if I'm paying for a service I do not want a person who is not busy standing at my shoulder and yakking and it would probably bother me if it were any other language, including  English!
As I stated earlier this is my wind down relax get unstressed time, and I've had plenty to be stressed about these past six months.
I ask my nail tech all about her country and love to hear her information.  Go back there?  She says never, not even to visit!
As I work 2 days a week, two of the employees are from the Philipines.  These are two of the nicest, most polite men I've ever known.  Do they speak to each other in their native language, Yes, but so soft one cannot pickup a word and there are times I wish they would speak louder so I can learn some phrases.  Are we friends, you bet for I would do anything for them and vice versa.  Do they visit in our home?  Absolutely!

Our neighborhood is so culturally divided, if a person were a racist here you would nave no neighbors and friends and I'm happy to say we do have neighbors and friends.  We get together frequently and diverse we are, Viet Nam, South America, Nigeria,  Sweden, England, France, Mexico, Germany, Puerto Rico, Iran.  So you can very well tell this house cannot be prejudice in any way.  I treat people with the same  respect and friendliness they show me,  not from their race or color.

We grew up in an area where you speak English or get passed over in school.  I think about the Mexican kids in grade school and what a disadvantage they had trying to learn.  And our teachers had no patience, why, probably because they did not know what to do either!  Whatever a person feel and no matter what they think, Texas is a border state and not teaching spanish to us starting in the first grade is nothing but an injustice to every student.  My husband and I have made it a point to learn as much spanish as we can teach ourselves so we can at least converse when in Mexico, our second home!  Just kiddin' we sure do not have another home there, just love to visit!

Racist I certainly am not, but if I'm paying you speak to me and around me in English!  That is my point!

As I first stated, this thread was certainly NOT to offend anyone, so cool down ya'll!

I too find it rude Luci and as stated my in-laws speak English out of respect for the Country of which they are citzens and other than rare occasions they speak English 99% of the time even when talking to each other. Their belief is that this is the Language of the Country they have chose to live in and they made GREAT efforts to learn the language not knowing it before they got here. They feel it not only rude to others to speak Spainish in front of others who dont but they feel it rude to the country (USA) of which they have adopted as their own, and has gave them jobs and the ability to raise their children.

David, it is very obvious you have exceptionally wonderful in-laws.
If and when we go to France or Canada, you can be sure we will start learning some French, phrases at least as to not feel so totally bewildered.
One of the Osmond Brothers, Wayne,  speaks 5 languages fluently.  I'm envious!  He did something else all those years besides tour and sing!

To learn something new is an ongoing adventure!

luci... how about.. you just change for a new salonHuh One where you would be served in English, by English speaking people? That way, you give your american money to Americans and your american ears gets to hear a langage they know.

Thats what I would do, if I was in your situation and if it was really annoying me.

I have enough on my plate to start looking for another salon, as I'm alredy looking for another gyn doc.  A person can only do so much.  It isn't asking much of them to give a client some respect so they can rest, relax and be pampered.

My 82 yr old Mother with failing health and rapid memory loss has me stressed enough, for soon she may not even know me at all!

The point isn't that they speak another language.  I don't know Spanish to speak it, but run across lots of conversations "out in the world" in Spanish, for instance.  That doesn't bother me...nor any other language.  But, if you are paying for any service or doing any kind of business, and someone comes up and chatters on and on in any language, I'd find it rude.  Even if it were English.  It isn't the language, so much as it's the conversation.
