I'm sorry to hear this - check this:

Plus, unless she hasn't already done this, she needs to have a discussion with her doctor to explain what these diseases are, how they can affect her life and what the various treatments are.

I believe that is the type of cancer my Dad had!
Sorry, this is not a good thing to hear.

I've known two people with Hodgkins. My aunt died from it many years ago, but recently results have been much better. I have a friend who had it, but she's been in complete remission now for over ten years. As I understand it, Hodgkins is one of the most treatable of these things. I've never heard of the other that you mentioned.

I was looking over the list the other day and I was sure I saw Hodgkins, so went looking again and it is there. Stem cells (like from cord blood) can cure Hodgkins Disease:

Thanks for bringing up the cord blood issue again.  I was talking to Deb about it again the other day.  She seemed interested but I couldn't fully explain it to her.  I'll send her that info to print out.

Now that she's expecting again, I hope when her doc. appt. comes around, she'll remember to speak about this.  I don't really know if Canada allows this or not (retaining cord blood).

Here's the homesite of one of the sites you showed:

I am certain I heard Addams say she banked her daughter's cord blood, so I am sure they allow this in Canada.

I think that if you can afford it, it's worth it.  For example both Diabetes and Alzheimer's are areas they are researching and making progress with, with stem cells from cord blood, and both of which also run in my family.  I have also read that Celiac Disease increases your risk of diabetes too.  So, it's possible down the road that the blood we banked could be used to cure my son of diabetes if he gets it as a result of the Celiac Disease.  It can't cure his Celiac, but it may help us keep some of the worst possible side effects of Celiac at bay.  My hope is that some day we may be able to cure his grandpa of diabetes as well.

yes we banked our daughter's cord blood.  I had a good job at the time and paid for it myself.  My husband refused to pay for it.  Sigh.

when Deb goes to the doctor she should enquire.  It is definitely possible to do.

They told us how much they got and everything.

As an immunologist in a former life cord blood has great possibilities.

Azure - Hodgkins can have a good recovery.  I will try to find out more info.  Please let us know if when your friend gets the final diagnosis.

I understand that Hodgkins has a high recovery rate too.

And we certainly didn't intend to highjack your thread when cord blood was brought up.  But I thank addams, my love friend, for confirming this is worthwhile.

I was wondering how was your friend doing...has he/she got any diagnosis?

When I read that post first, the name of the disease rang me a bell....and I had to ask my hubby to be sure (he's the hockey maniac here) and yup,
Mario Lemieux had Hodgkin's disease and he survived.

Quote:
The 1992-93 campaign brought unforeseen challenges to Lemieux. In January 1993, he was diagnosed with a form of Hodgkins Disease. After the initial shock, he underwent treatment and began preparing to return to his team. In one of his greatest personal triumphs, Lemieux returned to the Penguins and led his team to an NHL record 17 consecutive victories.

Here are some links if you or your friend are interested in reading about his cancer survival story.

http://www.angelfire.com/sports/marioreport/

http://www.mariolemieux.org/medical/research.htm

http://www.mirm.pitt.edu/news/article.asp?qEmpID=14

I could go on and on... but they are all telling about the same thing.  Since he won his battle against cancer, he's puting in a lot of time and money for the research.

The most important thing is that he survived. Smiley

Also, this young boy, Dave, has a web site about his personnal experience with Hodgkin's disease.
http://www.davesite.com/hodgkins/
If you are reading the whole story-chronological events, gets ready to shed a tear, or two... Sad

But guess what? He survived also, and its been a bit more than 5 years now.

Keep us posted Az.  Ya know, we care. Wink
