Plus, unless she hasn't already done this, she needs to have a discussion with her doctor to explain what these diseases are, how they can affect her life and what the various treatments are.

I've known two people with Hodgkins. My aunt died from it many years ago, but recently results have been much better. I have a friend who had it, but she's been in complete remission now for over ten years. As I understand it, Hodgkins is one of the most treatable of these things. I've never heard of the other that you mentioned.

Now that she's expecting again, I hope when her doc. appt. comes around, she'll remember to speak about this. I don't really know if Canada allows this or not (retaining cord blood).

I think that if you can afford it, it's worth it. For example both Diabetes and Alzheimer's are areas they are researching and making progress with, with stem cells from cord blood, and both of which also run in my family. I have also read that Celiac Disease increases your risk of diabetes too. So, it's possible down the road that the blood we banked could be used to cure my son of diabetes if he gets it as a result of the Celiac Disease. It can't cure his Celiac, but it may help us keep some of the worst possible side effects of Celiac at bay. My hope is that some day we may be able to cure his grandpa of diabetes as well.

when Deb goes to the doctor she should enquire. It is definitely possible to do.

They told us how much they got and everything.

As an immunologist in a former life cord blood has great possibilities.

Azure - Hodgkins can have a good recovery. I will try to find out more info. Please let us know if when your friend gets the final diagnosis.

When I read that post first, the name of the disease rang me a bell....and I had to ask my hubby to be sure (he's the hockey maniac here) and yup,
Mario Lemieux had Hodgkin's disease and he survived.

I could go on and on... but they are all telling about the same thing. Since he won his battle against cancer, he's puting in a lot of time and money for the research.

The most important thing is that he survived.
