Yes, it is true.  Sorry for not posting yesterday, I was pretty busy most of the day.  Believe it or not, I was putting down plywood in my attic.  And here I thought that I would be laid-up in bed the whole day.  I am sore, but moving around.  Here's the whole story from Sunday.

We got to Center City Philadelphia around 7:00am for the 8:00am start.   After walking 2 miles to the start, I realized I forgot my number back at the car.  So I barely made it back in time for the start.  One of my running partners thought I bailed out on them.

The first 2 miles were insane.  There were some runners pushing and shoving.  Some really old guy almost mowed me down kicking both my feet on subsequent steps.  It thinned out some, but then even more so after a 10-minute delay mentioned below.  After that we had the whole road.

My knees hurt from the beginning until about the 5th mile then the pain leveled off.  I was wearing the Pro-Tec Patellar Tendon Straps on both knees and they worked perfect.  I recommend them highly for anyone with runner's knee (chondromalacia).

I also have a metatarsal problem on my left foot (Which I finally got orthotics for after visiting the smoldering WTC ruins 2 years ago with a friend from here).  I use a pad to help during running when the orthotics are impractical.  I removed this pad when I saw my family at the 9 mile mark and I am regretting it today.  The pain I haven't experienced in almost 2 years is back, but I know it will go away.  I will never run without the metatarsal pad again.

In the 3rd mile I had a new problem...diarrhea.  It wasn't the garden variety either, this was best described as explosive diarrhea.  There were porta-potties every 2 miles, but I had to wait in line for 10 minutes for the 1st only to discover no toilet paper!  Ten wasted minutes!!  This was repeated for the next porta-potty.  I was in alot of pain by mile 6.  Two of our families met us at mile 9 and my wife brought tissues with her so the next potty was a relief.  I did need to stop for the same reason two more times.  This is what impacted our time the most.  I again carried my little camera with me.  You can see we ran 10-11 minute miles by the pictures taken of the mile marker clocks.  You can tell by the time which miles I stopped for the porta potties.

That condition aside, we had a good race.  We ran every bit of the course.  None of us hit "The Wall".  This surprised us.  I attribute two things to this.  First, we ran as a team.  So we had morale support right beside us.  Second, we kept eating and drinking the whole course.

Our families planned the support stops well.  We saw two of our families 3 times, mile 9, mile 15 and at the finish.  Mile 9 is right at the Philadelphia Zoo where we have a membership so the kids enjoyed the Zoo before and after we went by.  Then they crossed the river and met us at mile 15.  After that, they where waiting at the finish.

At the mile 9 stop my 7 year old girl was crying hugging Mommy.  I asked what was wrong and my wife said, "Nothing, she's crying because she's so proud of you.".  If that wasn't enough motivation, my 4 year old boy was tugging my shirt trying to give me a penny.  I bent over and took it and he said, "Daddy, remember me.  Don't ever forget me."  I wasn't expecting that much emotion which converted into motivation as we ran on.

Though I said this would be my only marathon, I am already reconsidering.  It wasn't easy by any stretch of the imagination, but it wasn't as difficult as my mind made it out to be.

Some of my lessons learned are:
- Run a marathon with others.
- Imodiun AD is as important as Advil in the pouch
- Eat bread at mile 13, it will be energy by the finish
- Run through the pain

I have 4 or 5 pictures I'll share.  Let me go get them ready.

Thank you katy for motivating me.  Two years ago I was out of running completely when you finished the NYC Marathon that got me up off my ass and back out running.

Here are the promised pictures from the 2003 Philadelphia Marathon.

What are friends for?  Why, to make faces behind your back at Mile 5 in the Philadelphia Marathon

Mile 12 at 2:27.33

Mile 13.1 (Halway point) at 2:39.38 shows we were still moving good when no porta-potties were needed.

We made it!

You're a marathoner all right - and so much more.  You've proven to yourself you CAN do what you want/wish if you push through any and all "walls".  You did it!   Kiss

Thank you too for the pbp and the pix!   Tongue

You're very welcome Matt, I am very proud of you for finishing what you started. I did forget to tell you about the lack of paper at port a potties. So now what you have to do is enter the lottery in January for NYC 2004 marathon. You don't find out until June if your in, but since I already qualified for the race, you have to at least try to get in.
Happy Thanksgiving to all!!
