WORLD TRADE CENTER QUILT

A quilt by Lois Jarvis, Madison, WI. 2002

When you go to the URL provided below, you can click many times on the quilt to zoom into its' depth.  Guaranteed to take your breath away.  It's mind-boggling to me

GROUND ZERO

A quilt by Lois Jarvis, Madison, WI. 2002

"I am not as eloquent with words as some people are. And why I needed to make this quilt I could not say. I do not personally know anyone who perished that day. I don't plan to sell this quilt. So why I made it is a mystery to me. All I can say is that I felt I should do it because I knew I could do it.  Now that it is done I am finding the answer to why I felt the strong urge to make it."

Wow, that's really incredible.  The detail on the star when you view the close ups is quite touching.  I was looking at it and my 5 year old asked me what it was and I told him "those are the faces of people who died in the world trade center" and he crawled on my lap and said, "will you tell me that story?" and I tried my best to tell it in kid terms so he would understand why the blanket made me sad, but not be too freaked out himself.

Good Lord, Rhune.  How did you get through the story without breaking down?  Just looking at the quilt this morning, was almost too much to bear.

I wonder.....how many years have to pass before the memory fades enough so that one doesn't have "flashbacks" to that horrific morning?

It was not easy, he's already asked me to tell him the story again when we were riding in the car later.

Wings, thanks for sharing this with us.  It is a truly beautiful expression of tribute to the 911 victims.  Quilting has always interested me, although it is one of few crafts that I have never tried.

Rhune, how sad, that you had to tell your son this story.  That must have been difficult, I'm not sure what I would have said.  The fact that he wanted to hear it again later in the day says a lot.  How old was he on 9/11?

I've just gone to the site and seen the large picture of the quilt.  What a lovely tribute to those lost on 9-11.
Thanks for putting it on this site for all to view.  I've passed it on to my friends as well.
