Pitiful Video

Ok I half understood (but didnt agree) when Country Music gave Johnny Cash an award for his video "Hurt" but now The Grammys did as well! For those who havent seen it, it isnt much more than Cash and his guitar singing a song about his late wife. Now that alone sounds good I know a real tear jerking but Cash was so far gone into his own disease he voice was cracked and almost strained at times. The once comanding voice was gone and replaced by a pathetic "moan" almost. Johnny Cash is one of Country's Greatest ever but to award him for a video that Simon from American Idol would have blasted in the first few seconds is an insult to both Cash and The Awards themselves! Cash has a GREAT career no doubt but to award such a poorly done video is a FARSE! That is one of the reason I dont watch Award shows anymore they dont award REAL talent anymore it more a popularity contest!

David, I agree with you totally.  We could not see why in the world Cash & June were given that award last night.  That is a very old recording and they are dead for goodness sake!

Give an award to someone living.  They got theirs while alive
p.s. I only watched the award show last night so I could see what they did to honor The Beatles!
Roll EyesNot much I must say!

Maybe it's a generational thing...but my husband and I love that song and I think it's great that he remade it.  It's the only Cash song I have.

I think it's pretty sad to read dissing of Johnny Cash here.  There were others honoured who have passed on too.

Ok first I want to claify I didnt watch awards I was told Cash's video "Hurt" won I was wrong Second I wasnt trying to DISS Mr. Cash I have enjoyed his work for YEARS I felt the video "Hurt" was but a pitiful shell of "The Man in BLack" he looked weak and frail his voice cracked and sounded poor. It was either The CMA's or ACM's that gave him and June awards for their work (latest). If anyone had tried to air video "Hurt" and it wasnt Cash or some other start it would have laughed at at Simon would have dissed this so badly had this sound been sang that it is on video for American Idol. I liked Cash and all his work and admired what he did with life. If post looked like a DISS I am truly sorry Cash was one of the greats. My thread was meant to show where opinons rather than talent oftenm get in the way of the voters

Not at all was I dissing Johnny or June Cash.  My personnal point is, they had their time when alive.  We have their records, tapes, etc.
We even met the Cash's, lovely couple!  But to award the Grammy to her instead of some others to me made no sense.

I well remember the years that both Johnny & June received award upon award for their music.

I honor them and respect them for the way the lived their life together and are happy they received so many awards when living.

Modifying to say, that even though we did not care for the song "Hurt" by Johnny, at least  he recorded it this past year.  But to dig into the archives, find this song from years ago, plus to even nominate June for it, I find very unfair to the other female singers.
Now, this is my opinion and I'm stickin' to it!

David:  "Hurt" Is not about June it's is a song that was originally done By Trent Reznor for Nine Inch Nails.  The song was about shooting heroin and Tori Amos.  Cash Actually sang it the way it was intended to be sang, and I thought He did it alright.  My problem with the song was that it got zero respect when Trent Reznor did it, but as soon as Cash did it, all the sudden it was this great and wonderful song,  bleh, stupid masses.

I'm not sure Trent ever wanted respect from the masses though. Wink

I actually went to high school with someone who dated Tori Amos and lived with her for a bit before she hit the big time.  My understanding was that she could drive any man to write a song like Hurt. :devilish:  She was apparently not very easy to live with.

Perhaps I wasnt clear enough Cash was GREAT no doubt this video and his singing of it showed a weak frail cracking voice and man hardly The tough guy we all remember. I felt this song did no justice to Cash's talent and if anyone else would have done this song like Cash did they would have been shown the door. I understand Cash did the best he could but again it was hardly award winning! By the way I love Cash's music I have many of his works here at home and I in NO WAY want to DISS him.

It should have been called the "pity award" for his voice was definitely gone.  Now don't be writing mre mean posts.  He was way past his prime and his tough guy image, just as David stated.

If I were a star of any kind, I certainly would want to leave with folks remembering how good I had been, not how bad I was near the end!  'nough said on this by me!  Lips Sealed
